Gibson’s Finest 2013 CFL Players of the Week (Divisional Finals): Sheets, McElveen, Ferri & Fantuz

TORONTO – Kory Sheets, Jermaine McElveen, Diamond Ferri and Andy Fantuz were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Division Finals Players of the Week, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges including: former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

RB – Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan Roughriders running back Kory Sheets was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the Western Final. Sheets had a season-high 28 carries for 177 yards (6.3 YPC) and scored a touchdown to help Saskatchewan clinch a berth in the 101st Grey Cup in Regina with a 35-13 win on the road against Calgary.

Sheets scored his one-yard touchdown by leaping over the Saskatchewan offensive line and Calgary defensive line late in the fourth quarter.

In both of Saskatchewan’s playoff games, Sheets has recorded 245 yards on 45 carries (5.4 YPC) and one touchdown. He also has two receptions for 63 yards.

Sheets, a Purdue University product, rushed for 1,598 yards during the regular season, good enough for second in the league.

This is Sheets’ fourth Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week, with his prior accolades coming in Weeks 3, 9 and 17. He was also named Gibson’s Offensive Player of the Month in July.

Jermaine McElveen

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive tackle Jermaine McElveen was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Western Final. McElveen had team-high five tackles – one for a loss –  and an interception in the Roughriders win over Calgary.

McElveen was able to set the tone early by intercepting a Kevin Glenn pass in the first possession of the Western Final and return it 15 yards.

McElveen, an Alabama-Birmingham standout, recorded 19 tackles and 6 sacks during the 2013 season.

Diamond Ferri
LB – Saskatchewan Roughriders
Saskatchewan Roughriders 35 @ Calgary Stampeders 13

Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker Diamond Ferri was named the Special Teams Player of the Week in the Western Final. Ferri had a game-high four special teams tackles and three defensive tackles in Saskatchewan’s win in Calgary.

Ferri, a former Syracuse University player, recorded 12 defensive tackles, 12 special teams tackles and three interceptions on the season for Saskatchewan.

Andy Fantuz
WR – Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton Tiger-Cats 36 @ Toronto Argonauts 24

Hamilton Tiger-Cats wide receiver Andy Fantuz was named the Canadian Player of the Week in the Eastern Final. Fantuz caught a season-high 11 receptions for 114 yards and added a pair of touchdowns to help the Tiger-Cats clinch a Grey Cup berth by defeating the Argonauts 36-24.

Fantuz, a Chatham, ON native, caught touchdown passes from seven and four yards out in the game.

Fantuz, an eight-year CFL veteran and CIS record holder for single season and career receiving yards with Western, recorded 65 receptions, 896 yards and three touchdowns this season.
