CFL veteran Cory McDiarmid named Gee-Gees football assistant coach

The uOttawa Gee-Gees are proud to announce the signing of Cory McDiarmid as football assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. McDiarmid brings with him nine years of experience in the Canadian Football League, including three trips to the Grey Cup, which he won with the B.C. Lions in 2000. He has coached with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Montreal Alouettes, the Calgary Stampeders, the Toronto Argonauts, and the B.C. Lions.

Prior to coaching in the CFL, McDiarmid coached for six seasons in the CJFL, three seasons in the CIS at UBC, where he won a Vanier Cup in 1997, and one season with British Columbia’s Under 19 Provincial Team wherein he coached them to a Canada Cup Championship in 2000. He also served as defensive coordinator and special teams assistant at the Jim Barker School of Football in 2004.

McDiarmid will join head coach Jean-Philippe Asselin as they try to find the same success that brought the Gee-Gees to the Yates Cup last season for the first time since 2007.

“To have someone coming in with nine years of CFL experience is great, but also having three years of experience in the CIS is tremendous,” said Asselin. “Cory brings a lot of experience in coaching Canadian football, and we are looking forward to start working towards our ultimate goal of a Vanier Cup,” he added.

As for McDiarmid, he’s most looking forward to getting to work with the players and coaching staff: “One of the most rewarding things about coaching is the relationships you build with the players and staff, as you all work together to accomplish a common goal.”

“I will be able to bring some fresh ideas as an outside perspective. But the great thing about joining a team that already has a solid foundation is that I will be just looking to enhance the successes that coach Asselin and his staff have been able to create at the University of Ottawa,” said McDiarmid.

Assistant coach McDiarmid will officially assume his duties as of April 1, 2011.
