Change of Leadership at Saint Mary’s University Athletics

Saint Mary’s University announced Friday that Steve Sarty will leave the position of Director of Athletics and Recreation effective August 31. The decision follows discussions between Mr. Sarty and the University.Mr. Sarty joined the University in April 2009 and during his tenure played a key role in the development of the new Homburg Centre for Health and Wellness.Β Β He is an alumnus and played for the Huskies football team as a wide receiver from 1991-1995.

β€œThe position of Director of Athletics is a complex one,” said Director of Student Services Keith Hotchkiss. β€œDuring his time here Steve has accomplished a great deal, but at the end of the day it wasn’t the fit we were looking for.”

β€œI will take away many great memories and countless friendships,” said Mr. Sarty. β€œI had the opportunity to work in a great environment with some amazing people and I am extremely grateful for this. I will certainly miss the connections with the student-athletes, coaches and friends and family of Saint Mary’s University but I will continue to be passionate for Huskies Athletics.”

An interim director will be appointed while a nationwide search for a replacement is organized. The University wishes Mr. Sarty well in future endeavours.

Saint Mary’s has a proud tradition of excellence in university athletics competition, winning more than 70 AUS and eight CIS Championships.
