Canada West football Players of the Week: Dzwilewski, Friesen, Coombs

EDMONTON – Calgary QB Eric Dzwilewski, Saskatchewan Huskies DB Mitch Friesen and Manitoba Bisons return specialist Anthony Coombs are Canada West football Players of the Week.
OFFENCE: #11 Eric Dzwilewski, Calgary
Third-year quarterback Eric Dzwilewski directed the Calgary offence with the most efficient game in University of Calgary history as the No. 3-ranked Dinos wrapped up a 7-1 season with a wild 78-54 win over Manitoba on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium.
Dzwilewski was also Canada West offensive Player of he Week in Week #1.
Playing just the first half, Dzwilewski completed his first 18 passes and finished 25-for-27 on the night, a school-record 92.6 per cent completion rate. He threw for 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Dinos built up a massive 63-14 lead in the opening half, scoring 42 points in the second quarter alone.
The game wrapped up a career season for Dzwilewski. He finished with a Canada West-record 70.6 completion percentage on the year, throwing for 2,290 yards – the third-best season in Dinos history – and 15 touchdowns. The offence he leads set nine team single-season records, including points scored (380), touchdowns (42), first downs (272), passing yards (2,997), completions (213), completion percentage (71.7), converts (42), field goals (22), and total offence (4,720).
Dzwilewski and the Dinos are right back at it against the Bisons Saturday when they host Manitoba in a Canada West semifinal game, live on Shaw TV and www.canadawest.tv, from McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
DEFENCE: #24 Mitch Friesen, Saskatchewan
Mitch Friesen of the Saskatchewan Huskies helped his team to a 54-24 victory over UBC Thunderbirds with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Friesen, a fifth-year defensive back from Saskatoon, snared his first interception in the first quarter returning it 50 yards. He added his second in the second quarter returning it seven yards. His fumble recovery also came in the second quarter.
The Education student also added 5.5 tackles in the game.
Friesen and the Huskies will travel to Regina to meet the Regina Rams in a Canada West semifinal Friday night. Kick off is 7 p.m. in Mosaic Stadium.
SPECIAL TEAMS: #1 Anthony Coombs, Manitoba
Manitoba Bisons running back/kick returner Anthony Coombs was a standout during a wild 78-54 road loss at Calgary in the last conference regular season game for both teams. He scored three different ways – running, receiving and special teams. His 98-yard touchdown punt return at the start of the third quarter began a 40 point outburst from the Bisons after they were down 63-14 at half.
The second-year back weaved his way through numerous players to jump start Manitoba after a tough first half. His electrifying punt return was his first punt return for a touchdown this season.
Overall, the Winnipeg native had four punt returns for 107 yards and 1 TD plus a kickoff return for 10 yards on special teams in the loss.
Coombs is one of two players, with teammate Nic Demski, to score a punt return touchdown in Canada West action this season. Coombs also tied for first in conference touchdowns this season, with nine.
#10 Manitoba (4-4) now travels back to play at #3 Calgary in the Hardy Cup semifinal match-up on Saturday, November 3 with kickoff at 5:00 p.m. MT at McMahon Stadium.

Uren, Wiggans and Patrician named OUA football players of the week

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 28, 2012.
OFFENCE: Matt Uren, Western Mustangs, Receiver
Matt Uren, a second-year receiver from London, Ontario, caught four touchdown passes in Saturday’s 56-35 win over the Windsor Lancers in the OUA quarter-finals. The four touchdown receptions in a single game is a new OUA playoff record and is one short of the CIS playoff record of five. In total, the Health Sciences student racked up 403 yards, catching eight passes for 166 yards, running the ball three times for 40 yards, returning six punts for 135 yards and adding three kickoff returns for 62 yards.
DEFENCE: Derek Wiggan, Queen’s Gaels, Lineman
Derek Wiggan led a Gaels defence that completely stifled the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday in the OUA quarter-final. The Toronto native made 4.5 tackles, three for losses as the Gaels held Laurier to only 179 total yards and completely shut the Golden Hawks off the scoreboard. The third-year lineman led the Gaels with two sacks in the 34-0 win.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Chris Patrician, Queen’s Gaels, Punt returner
Chris Patrician (Toronto) ran a punt back 94 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of the No. 6-ranked Gaels’ 34-0 win over Laurier on Saturday. The return was the second-longest punt return touchdown in school history. All told, the fourth-year punt returner ran back nine punts for 140 yards, on his way to a team-high 157 all-purpose yards.
Archambault est élu joueur défensif de la semaine pour une deuxième fois de suite
Montréal, le 29 octobre 2012 – Le secondeur Byron Archambault, des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal, a été élu joueur défensif de la dernière semaine dans la Ligue de football universitaire du Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) pour une deuxième fois consécutive.
Dans la dernière victoire de 37-7 des Bleus sur les Gaiters de Bishop’s au Coulter Field samedi dernier, Archambault (Sécurité intérieure) s’est illustré à nouveau. Il a réalisé 7,5 plaqués, dont six en solo. Deux de ceux-ci ont été réalisé derrière la ligne de mêlée, dont un sac du quart.
Le Montréalais de 21 ans a terminé la saison en tête chez les Carabins au chapitre des plaqués avec un total de 46, dont 35 en solo et six derrière la ligne de mêlée.
En plus de connaître leur meilleure saison depuis 2004 avec une fiche de huit victoires contre un revers, les Carabins ont terminé la saison avec la meilleure défense au Canada. Ils n’ont concédé que 102 points en neuf matchs. Un joueur des Carabins a été nommé joueur défensif de la semaine à quatre reprises. Jean-Samuel Blanc (Arts et sciences), nouveau recordman avec 12,5 sacs du quart en une saison, avait été choisi au terme des deuxième et cinquième semaines.
Le quart-arrière Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze (Droit) a été sélectionné à l’attaque à deux reprises. Sur les unités spéciales, Mikhaïl Davidson (Mathématiques et économie) et David Deschamps (Arts et sciences) ont été nommés durant la saison.
