OTTAWA (CIS) β As we approach the end of the regular season in CIS football β final weekend in OUA and two more weeks in the three other conferences β several star players hope to secure a place in the record books.
Among the standouts who will finish the 2011 campaign among the single-season all-time leaders, Western freshman running back has one more game to add to his 15 rushing touchdowns, Waterloo receiver Dustin Zender has 57 catches going into his final OUA contest, Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly enters the final weekend with 20 touchdown passes, while Montreal defensive lineman Jonathan Pierre-Γtienne has two more weeks to add to his 9.5 quarterback sacks.
Among the numerous players climbing up career lists, Laval wideout Julian Feoli-Gudino needs 21 receptions over his final two outings to set a new CIS record, Calgary running back Matt Walter must rush for 165 yards over the next two weekends to become the ninth player in history to reach the 4,000-yard plateau, Laurierβs Dillon Heap ranks third all-time with 2,041 punt return yards, Sherbrooke kicker William Dion is 10 field goals shy of the CIS mark with two games to play, Queenβs kicker Dan Village is eighth on the all-time scoring list, and Saskatchewanβs Bryce McCall is three interceptions away from the CIS record with two games remaining on the Huskiesβ schedule.
Two coaches could also make history this weekend as they are both looking for the 100th overall win of their CIS head coaching careers (regular season & playoffs). Calgaryβs Blake Nill, whose No. 2-ranked Dinos host Manitoba on Saturday, has a 99-40 lifetime mark, while Lavalβs Glen Constantin is 99-22 going into Sundayβs much-anticipated showdown between his No. 3 Rouge et Or and No. 4 Sherbrooke, in Quebec City.
Eleven CIS head coaches have previously reached the milestone including two active sideline bosses, Saskatchewanβs Brian Towriss (170-96-1), who set the new all-time standard of 170 earlier this fall, and Queenβs Pat Sheahan (121-85-1).
