CIS Players of the Week (12): Timmis, Desloges & McLean honoured

OTTAWA  – Calgary running back Mercer Timmis, Laval defensive end Vincent Desloges and Mount Allison kicker Kyle McLean are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Nov. 9, 2013.

Timmis, a second-year business student from Burlington, Ont., was honoured on offence thanks to his record performance in a 43-28 Canada West final win over Manitoba, last Saturday in Calgary. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound sophomore carried the ball 28 times for 279 yards, a single-game personal-best and a conference playoff mark, and also scored two touchdowns to bring his season total to 23 in 10 contests. The now reigning six-time Hardy Cup champion Dinos (10-0) host top-ranked Western (10-0) in the Centaur Mitchell Bowl Saturday at 2 p.m. MST (4 p.m. EST), live on Sportsnet 360 and www.cis-sic.tv.

Mount Allison wide receiver Josh Blanchard, Laval running back Guillaume Bourassa and Western receiver Matt Uren were also up for the award.

Desloges, a second-year business administration student from St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., took home the weekly honour on defence after spending the afternoon in the Montreal backfield during Saturday’s RSEQ championship game in Quebec City. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound athlete collected 7.5 tackles, including 4.5 behind the line of scrimmage and three quarterback sacks, while also forcing a fumble in Laval’s 14-11 triumph over its archrival. The reigning 11-time Dunsmore Cup titlist Rouge et Or (10-0) visit Mount Allison (6-4) Saturday at 1:30 p.m. AST (12:30 p.m. EST) in the Uteck Bowl, live onSportsnet 360Radio-Canada and www.cis.sic.tv.

Mount Allison linebacker Te Nguyen, Western linebacker Preston Huggins de Western and Calgary halfback Cyril Iwanegbe were also nominated.

McLean, a third-year geography student from Nepean, Ont., earned the nod on special teams thanks to his last-minute field goal which lifted the Mounties to a 20-17 Loney Bowl win against Saint Mary’s, in Halifax. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior, who averaged 38 yards per punt on the day and had already split the uprights from 30 yards out earlier in the game, booted a 25-yarder into the wind with 53 seconds left in regulation to break a 17-17 deadlock and send Mount Allison to the national semifinals for the first time since 1997.

Kickers Boris Bedé of Laval, Lirim Hajrullahu of Western and Johnny Mark of Calgary were the other nominees.
