OTTAWA β Regina quarterback Cayman Shutter, St. Francis Xavier defensive back Demetrius Ferguson and Bishopβs kicker Mathieu Paquette are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 14, 2013.
Shutter, a Master of arts student from Kailua, Hawaii, was honoured on offence following a spectacular performance which helped the Rams (1-2) secure their first win of the season, a 55-35 road victory over Alberta on Saturday night. The 6-foot-1 pivot, in his first year with Regina after playing three seasons with the University of Hawaii, completed 37 of 54 passes for 484 yards and four touchdowns, while also scoring twice on the ground on one-yard plunges. Shutterβs 37 completions and 484 yards through the air both rank second in program history and, with 1,207 passing yards through three games, he is on pace to break the single-season Canada West record of 2,823 set by Calgaryβs Greg Vavra in 1983.
StFX wide receiver Jordan Catterall, McGill quarterback Jonathan Collin and Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey were also up for the award.
Ferguson, a second-year business student from Nassau, Bahamas, took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to his two interceptions in a 35-18 interlocking win at Concordia, including one he returned on 103 yards for a touchdown, giving him the second longest interception return in StFX history and the fourth longest in the Atlantic conference. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound veteran, who is in his fifth year of CIS eligibility, also had a forced fumble and 4.5 tackles as the X-Men (2-0) remained the only undefeated team in AUS.
Montreal tackle Olivier Daoust-Pichette, Western linebacker Beau Landry and Regina linebacker Michael Stefanovic were also nominated.
Paquette, a fifth-year political science student from Sherbrooke, Que., was the choice on special teams after he was perfect on three field goal attempts in a 22-21 success against cross-town rival Sherbrooke, including the game-winning 47-yarder β a personal best β with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. The 5-foot-11, 202-pound senior, who had previously split the uprights from 33 and 44 yards out, also averaged 42.3 yards on seven punts to help the No. 10 Gaiters (2-1) return to the national Top 10.
StFX kicker Hayden Peters, Western kicker Lirim Hajrullahu and Alberta returner Tylor Henry were the other nominees.
