GAME NOTES

As if August hasn’t been hot enough, Ron Joyce Stadium will see temperatures soar with a case of 2016 Football Fever when the McMaster Marauders host the Carleton Ravens to open the OUA football season. Kickoff for the home opener is set for Sunday, August 28th at 7:00 pm.

The Marauders will take the field Sunday night under new head coach Greg Knox, looking to reinforce McMaster’s position as a conference power. Coach Knox is no stranger to Marauder Nation and is looking forward to forging his own legacy and getting the Maroon and Grey back into the OUA title picture.

They face a formidable opponent in Carleton, as the Ravens are now in their fourth season since the program was restored, and the team can no longer be viewed as inexperienced. The initial recruits of 2013 are now seniors and after making the OUA semi-finals in 2015, Carleton is ready to challenge for the Yates Cup this season. Expectations are for Coach Steve Sumarah to lean on quarterback Jesse Mills, receiver Nate Behar, and running back Jahvari Bennett to lead the offense, while the defense is now a veteran group and should be stronger by the addition of some key recruits.

It is also a very senior group of Marauders that will take the field this season, with lots of experience on both sides of the football. Along with that experience, there is enough depth and talent to make the competition for playing time very intense, guaranteeing a hungry band of Marauders will take the field for every game..

With several of the Marauders spending time in CFL training camps last summer, that experience will make the team better as those players assume leadership roles. The Marauders will need to be at their best for this early season clash, knowing that a victory will set the tone for a successful 2016 season.

A limited number of tickets for Sunday’s game are available and can be purchased online at marauders.ca or at the stadium box office.

The game is also available on radio on Funny 820 AM with Steve Clark and Joey Cupido, and available via livestream on OUA.tv.
