CIS RECAP [2]: Mustangs fall to Carleton

Western (31) vs Carleton (38)

Despite a furious comeback that saw them score 31 straight points, the Western Mustangs fell to the Carleton Ravens by a 38-31 score on Sunday night at MNP Park.

The result leaves both teams with a 1-1 record after two games, with Western previously defeating Windsor, while Carleton lost to McMaster to open the season.

After a slow start that saw them trailing 24-0 midway through the second quarter, the Mustangs fought back in impressive fashion, rattling off 31 consecutive points from the late stages of the second quarter until the beginning of the fourth.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, a pair of Jesse Mills touchdown passes put Carleton back in front, and the Ravens defence stopped Western’s final drive just yards short of the end zone to secure the win.

Leading the way for Western on Sunday was running back Alex Taylor who picked up 147 yards rushing on 18 attempts with two touchdowns. Cedric Joseph was next on the Mustangs rushing leaderboard with one score and 63 yards on nine attempts. Jayde Rowe powered the Ravens ground attack with 161 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

Stevenson Bone got the start at quarterback for Western, going 16-25 with 141 yards with one touchdown, whileChris Merchant saw playing time as well, completing four of his seven attempts for 70 yards. Mills led the Ravens offence, throwing for 341 yards and two touchdowns on 28-35 passing.

The Ravens didn’t wait long before getting on the board on Sunday, with Tunde Adeleke taking the Mustangs first punt back 85 yards to give them a 7-0 lead just over 90 seconds into the game.

Adeleke’s score would be the only points of the first quarter, however the Ravens extended their lead early in the second frame thanks to a conceded safety from the Mustangs and a single. Rowe then further increased the Carleton lead with a pair of rushing touchdowns, one from 74 yards out and one from the two-yard line.

Western struck back after Rowe’s second touchdown, as a 52-yard rush from Taylor set up a short touchdown run for the Winnipeg native, getting the Mustangs on the board late in the quarter.

Those seven points quickly turned into 14, as a Carleton fumble led to Western going on a seven play, 44-yard scoring drive. Bone capped off the drive with a play action pass to Antonio Valvano to cut the Ravens lead to 24-14 and giving the fullback his first career CIS touchdown.

The Mustangs momentum from the final minutes of the first half carried over into the second, starting things off with a field goal on their first possession and following that up with a one-yard touchdown run from Joseph to tie things up at 24-24.

After the Mustangs defence forced a two-and-out for Carleton towards the end of the third, the purple and white ground game continued to roll on the ensuing drive. Taylor picked up all 27 yards on three attempts, including a six-yard touchdown run that gave Western its first lead of the game at 31-24 early in the fourth quarter.

Despite falling behind for the first time all game, the Ravens responded on their second drive following the Mustangs touchdown. The home side drove 95 yards on 10 plays to record their first points of the second half when Mills hit receiver Nathaniel Behar on a 15-yard pass that tied the game at 31.

The Ravens followed that up three minutes later with another touchdown pass, this one going to Wilson Birch from 12 yards out, to put Carleton back in front by seven.

With less than three minutes remaining in the contest the Mustangs began their final drive. Starting off at their own 17 yard line, Western drove down to the Carleton seven, before the Ravens were able to stop the Mustangs on the three yard line, forcing a turnover on downs and handing the purple and white their first regular season loss since 2014.

Next up for the Mustangs is a contest with the Waterloo Warriors on September 10 at TD Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m., and can be seen live on Rogers Cable 13 in London and on OUA.tv. Fans can also tune in on CHRW Radio 94.9 FM and on Newstalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.
