CIS: Toronto Varsity Blues to battle on Western front

The Varsity Blues football team heads to London, Ont., for a 1 p.m. showdown with the No. 5 Western Mustangs this Saturday, September 8 at TD Waterhouse Stadium.University of Toronto (1-0) opened their 2012 campaign with a convincing 19-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Labour Day. The Mustangs (1-0) return home this weekend after a lopsided 54-10 win over the Waterloo Warriors in Week 1.

Sophomore quarterback Richard Quittenton of Ajax, Ont., looked solid in his first game as the Blues starter, racking up 157 passing yards and rushing for Toronto’s two majors on the night. First-year running back Ashton Nelson (Brampton, Ont.) was equally as impressive, accounting for half of the Blues offensive output with 119 yards rushing and 21 receiving yards.

Toronto’s defensive unit did not disappoint, helping the Blues to their first shutout win since 1995. Rookie defensive back John Connors (Barrie, Ont.) as well as sophomore Spenser Stewart (Pickering, Ont.) led U of T with five tackles apiece, while Toronto’s D-line pressured Laurier quarterback Trevor Eman several times, sacking the NCAA transfer twice in the win.

The Blues must be mindful of Western University’s band of brothers – Garrett and Justin Sanvido. The duo accounted for five of Western’s seven touchdowns on Monday and 305 of the team’s 658 total yards. Garrett rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, while Justin caught nine passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

In last year’s meeting, the Blues fell 21-9 to the then No. 1 Mustangs at Varsity Centre. Toronto held a 9-7 at the half before Western rattled off 14 unanswered points. The story of the day was Western’s running back, Nathan Riva, who ran for 237 yards on 34 carries and one touchdown.

Toronto’s next home game is September 15th when they play host to the red-hot Windsor Lancers at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
