CISAA: St. Andrew’s goes a perfect 5-0 against St. Michael’s

St. Andrewā€™s College finish the 2012 CISAA regular season with a perfect 5-0 record.

Their last game was played on Saturday as they took on the current second place finisher St. Michaelā€™s College. It was a game was dominated by the SAC Saints as they won 36-0.

The game itself had no special playoff implications, but it was an interesting match that may set the tone for the playoffs. Scorerā€™s for the Saints included the usual cast of offensive weapons including slot back no. 88 Zach Marcus with two touchdowns, SB no. 1 Malcolm Carter with one touchdown and running back no. 2 Cole Sopik who scored one touchdown himself. Once again Saintā€™s quarterback Chris Merchant looked as good as ever with two passing touchdowns and threw for 250 passing yards.

For the first time this season the St. Michaelā€™s Kerry Blues were held scoreless. The cold rainy weather did nothing to help quarterback Calvin Vaughan find his targets or the run. Running back sensation no. 33 Simon Chang was held back thanks to a strong St. Andrewā€™s defense. ā€œDefensively, it was our best game of the seasonā€, says St. Andrewā€™s head coach Len Gurr. ā€œThey (the defensive players and coaches) were very well preparedā€.

Now that the regular season is over, a new season begins in the playoffs. The Saints have been able to dominate the league and now their supremacy will be put to the test. They will play in the semi-finals against the 2-3 Ashbury Colts. The Saints will have home field advantage and are the heavy favorites going into the game. However, coach Gurr is not looking beyond Ashbury at the moment. ā€œAshbury is a very well coached team. All season our mentality has been to not overlook any team and prepare as best we can. Our goal is to win a CISAA Championship, but first we have to win this gameā€.

St. Michaelā€™s will have a tough game ahead of them as they play the third place Upper Canada College Blues. SMC played UCC two weeks ago and pulled off a close but well-earned 27-20 win. They too will have home field advantage, but there should be many UCC supporters seeing as the two schools are in close proximity with each other.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
