CISAA: Upper Canada College defeats Trinity College School Bears

The Upper Canada College Blues won their season opener last Saturday as they defeated the Trinity College School Bears 59-2.

The Blues were the CISAA 2011 runnerā€™s up and were able to start their 2012 season on a positive note.

ā€œEverything went our wayā€, says UCC Blues head coach David Shaw. ā€œFootball is a game of momentum and our fast-paced, no-huddle style helped us get the momentum on our sideā€.

The Blues followed their game plan almost to a tee. The offensive line starring Pelle Jorgen, Chris Amoah and Marc-Andre Alexander along with a strong defensive team helped lead the team to their first win of the year.

Former wide receiver turned quarterback Liam Powers got the start as the Blues quarterback and showed great aptitude as the score continued to grow in the Blues favor. Liam Powers is the brother of former Blues QB Seamus Powers who graduated last year. Unlike is brother, Liam has more of a running style of game, and the Blues are hoping to capitalize on his speed and skill along with his arm strength.

Although Trinity was not able to put many points on the scoreboard, no. two on Trinityā€™s defense played extremely well. Possibly playing with an injured wrist, the middle linebacker managed to help defend the Trinity end zone for the entire game. Along with being a defensive force, he also played on offense on several occasions as a running back.

Unfortunately the Bears were missing their starting running back, putting the bears in a tough spot from the beginning. In spite of the adversity, the Bears played very hard and should have a successful season. Next week the team will be playing St. Michael’s College for St. Michael’s homecoming game at 2:00PM.

Next week, the UCC Blues will face off against the St. Andrewā€™s Saints in a rematch from last yearā€™s CISAA championship game.Ā Ā When asked about the upcoming game coach Shaw replied, ā€œWe are going to prepare like we always do. We arenā€™t focused on the opposition; we will just focus on fixing our mistakes. Our goal is to get better every dayā€.

Coach Shaw is very optimistic about the rest of the season. ā€œThis group is a great group of kids. We are having a lot of fun and we like working togetherā€.Ā Ā Their next game will be against the St. Andrewā€™s Saints Saturday September 29that 2:30PM at Upper Canada College.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
