CISAA: Villanova Upsets the St. Michael’s Kerry Blues

The Villanova Knights shocked the CISAA division last Saturday when they defeated the St. Michael’s Kerry Blues by a score of 30-9.

The homecoming victory was an historical win for the small school out of King City, as they were able to upset the traditionally strong team from Toronto.

“It was a huge win for us” says Villanova head coach Marcello Lio. “We only have 180 boys at our school”, continues Lio, “and to win this game was huge. We are very happy with our boys, coaching staff and our school”.

Last season the Kerry Blues finished 4-1, while the Knights went 1-4. The Kerry Blues went on to the semi-finals but lost to the eventual 2011 CISAA champions, St. Andrew’s Saints. This season the Kerry Blues will be a very strong team this year and they are sure to bounce back for their next game against the Trinity College Bears. The game will be during St. Michael’s homecoming so it is sure to be a very entertaining game.

“We focused on our execution”, says Lio. “Although we were physically outmatched by a more talented team, we focused on plays that we knew would work and we made the most out of our red zone chances”.

The Knights were led by running back Alex Montini who opened the scoring on a 65 yard run. Montini went on to run for 160 yards during the course of the game. Another driving force behind the Knights offense was wide receiver Domenic Battistella. The six foot four receiver and slot back scored two touchdowns which helped give the Knights a commanding lead over the Kerry Blues. Only allowing nine points, the defense proved they were a strong unit with a “bend, but don’t break style”, according to Lio.

Villanova will travel to the Ottawa area next weekend to take on the Ashbury Colts. “It will be their homecoming”, says Lio, “so they will be wanting to win. Of course, we are looking to win as well and hopefully go 2-0”. The Colts also finished last season with a 4-1 record, and lost their home opener against the St. Andrew’s Saints. Both Ashbury and Villanova are similar according to last year’s record and school size, which could mean the score will be close as well.

The Kerry Blues will face off against the Bears next Saturday at 2:00PM at St. Michael’s college, while Villanova plays Ashbury on the same day at 1:00PM.
