Offensive player of the week

Nathaniel Pinto / REC / Westshore Rebels

4 receptions, 149 yards, 1 TD

Nathaniel Pinto save his biggest game of the season for his team’s biggest game of the season as the Rebels defeated the Okanagan Sun in a first place battle Saturday night.

Two of his touchdowns came at especially key moments to swing momentum and set up the winning score respectively. Early in the 3rd quarter with the Rebels trailing 15-10, Pinto beat the Sun coverage for a 70-yard TD pass from quarterback Ashton MacKinnon. That score would give Westshore its first lead of the game

Then with under a minute to play, his 35 yard reception on a third and twelve gave the Rebels a first down at the Sun 15 yard line. That catch would lead to the game winning touchdown by running back Jamel Lyles.

 

Defensive player of the week

Isiah Stewart / LB / Langley Rams

2 tackles / 2 assists / 1 QB sack / 1 knockdown / 1 interception

Isiah Stewart and the Langley Rams made life miserable for the VI Raiders Saturday. The Rams pounced for a 25-0 on the way to a 32-17 pounding of the visiting Raiders.

Stewart had an outstanding game in all facets, if not sacking the Raiders quarterback, he was intercepting or deflecting his passes.

The Rams collectively limited the Raiders to 18 yards of net offense in the first have of this one.

 

Special Teams player of the week

Kealey Heintz / K / Okanagan Sun

9 punts, 34.5 average / 3 of 3 FG (26,27,33) / 2 of 2 converts

3 of 4 field goals, longest 47 yards

It was a game of field position in Langford as much of the game was splayed between the 30 yard lines Saturday night.

Okanagan Sun kicker Kealey Heintz was clutch in providing his club with key field position on his punts and was perfect when called on for converts and field goals.

His performance could be a difference maker in the battle for first place. Although his team lost the game, the 6- point margin of defeat matched what the Sun won the first game between the teams by. If the Sun and Rebels have identical records at season’s end, the tie breaker is points against overall in league play. The Sun have a 66-point edge there that will be tough to overcome.

Kickers seldom get noticed for the little things in the game. They get carried off the field for a game winning field goal or roasted for the one that went wide right.

The Okanagan Sun might be thanking Kealey for the little things on this night in a few weeks
