CJFL: BCFC week 5 in review

After the Labour Day bye all six teams were back in action during Week 5 in the BCFC with similar results as the three “R’s” once again posted victories.  The Rebels, Raiders and Rams all recorded their fourth wins of the year.

The “Game of the Week” in Kelowna turned out as advertised with two similar teams battling.  Ultimately it would be the Westshore Rebels beating the Okanagan Sun 27-24.

The opening kick-off was delayed an hour and a half as the Rebels bus broke down on the Coquihalla highway.

Despite the delay it didn’t take long for the Rebels to show why they were on a three game winning streak, thanks in large part to their run game.  Greg Morris, the “McKinnon Career Coaching Player of the Game” had a game high 20 carries for 101 yards and scored a touchdown.

Rebels quarterback Mark Black was 11 of 23 for 191 and threw a touchdown.  On a trick play receiver Cat Todorovich, who was the Rebels quarterback in 2011, threw a 40 yard TD pass to Eric Eggleston.   Todorovich would also catch four balls for 116 yards and a 76 yard major.

The reigning BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week, kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk would connect on two field goals from 32 and 36 yards out.

Defensively the Rebels compiled four quarterback sacks as Justin Perrie, Andrew Johnson and Curtis Parker recorded solo sacks while Nicholas Swaby and Chris Pastro shared one.  Wyatt Gray was terrific, leading the Rebels with five tackles and an assist. Tyler Fong intercepted a pass.

The Rebels (4-1) will host the Kamloops Broncos (1-4) on Sunday at 4:00pm.

The Okanagan Sun lose for the third straight game and are now 0-2 at home this season.

Turnovers plagued the Sun offence who would lose the ball on an interception and three times courtesy of the fumble.

Quarterback Cam Bedore finished 18 of 30 for 248 yards and threw two touchdowns.   His favourite receiver was Bobby Davis who caught six passes for 117 yards and a 94 yard TD reception.   He would also score a rushing touchdown from a yard out.  Tommy Howes caught five balls for 73 yards and a score.

The Sun defensive unit was once again on the field the majority of the night.  Steven Doege would be a nuisance for the

Rebels all night with five solo tackles, two assists and added two more sacks to his new CJFL sack record.   Alex Hupe was just as good as Doege with five solo tackles two assists and a sack. Terrance Mendes also recorded a sack, while Blake Butler picked off a pass.

The Sun (1-4) will host the Vancouver Island Raiders (4-0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Apple Bowl.
