CJFL: PFC week 9 review “Colts stay unbeaten”

PFC WEEK 9 IN REVIEW

WINNIPEG RIFLES         36

EDMONTON HUSKIES        28                OCTOBER 7 CLARKE PARK

The two winless clubs squared off in the first game of the 9th & final week and it would be the Huskies getting the first break of the contest as they forced and recovered a fumble on the first Winnipeg drive at the Rifles 19. Huskies quarterback Trevor Erdmann took advantage of the turnover as he called his own number & scampered 19 yards for the first score.

Undeterred, the Rifles got themselves on the scoreboard as Brad Mikoluff connected on a 24-yard field goal. Turnovers would plague Winnipeg early on as Grant Mailer blocked a Brad Mikoluff punt that would put Edmonton back in business again at the Winnipeg 50. The Huskies moved the ball to the Rifles 34, where Jonathan Heidebrecht was good on a 41-yard attempt to make it a 10-3 game. Winnipeg would tie the game on their next drive as Martin Hovi, who played his last junior game on this day, took off on a 55-yard run down to the Edmonton 20. Hovi capped the drive with his first of 3 touchdowns on the day to even the score at 10 after 1. Hovi ran for 291 yards on 32 carries.

The Rifles blew the game wide open in the second quarter as Hovi scampered 10 yards for his 2nd touchdown. The go-ahead major made it 17-10 8 minutes into the frame. Mikoluff tacked on his 2nd 3-pointer to up the lead to 20-10. Hovi would cash in for the 3rd time on a 1-yard plunge with 90 seconds left in the half, however Winnipeg was far from done as receiver Kurt Goodrich hauled in a 17-yard pass from John Kiesman who completed 13 of 19 passes for 190 yards to make it 34-10 game. Tack on a kickoff single on the next play and the Rifles had themselves a 25-point middle frame to make it 35-10 after 30.

The Huskies came out snarling in the third quarter as they scored 11 unanswered points as Heidebrecht connected on a 29-yard field goal nearly 7 minutes into the quarter. Stas Bessmirtniy , who has emerged as a solid tailback in the last half of the year caught a 10-yard touchdown from Erdmann to make it 35-20. Heidebrecht added a kickoff single and the deficit was cut to 14 after 45 minutes.

The 4th & final quarter saw more of the same from the Huskies. Bessmirtniy scored his 2nd major of the game on a 1-yard pass from Erdmann and it was 35-28. Erdmann passed for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Huskies drove down to the Winnipeg 40 in the final 2 minutes, but defensive back Jason Kelly put the dagger in the Huskies hopes as he picked off Erdmann’s pass at the Winnipeg 16.

REGINA THUNDER              15                    OCTOBER 7 MOSAIC STADIUM

Third place in the PFC and a date in Calgary or Saskatoon awaited the winner of the Thunder’s final home date of the year.

The lone score of the first quarter came when a Ben Koot field goal try went wide and the Cats conceded a single point. The scoring would pick up in the second quarter as heavy at times rain came down at Mosaic Stadium. Ideen Samadi was good on his first of two 3-pointers from 40 yards out to give Edmonton a 3-1 edge. Tyler Yaremchuk, who is guiding the Wildcat offense in the absence of starter Jordan Olson who’s sidelined with a broken wrist, put the Wildcats up 10-1 as he called his own number and ran 5 yards for the touchdown with under 3 minutes remaining in the frame. Yaremchuk completed 17 of 32 for 388 yards.

Camille Lagimodiere rallied Regina a minute later as he was all by his lonesome as he gathered an Asher Hastings pass for a 15-yard touchdown to pull the Thunder to within 2 at 10-8. Hastings passed for 363 yards on the day. But just as quickly, the visitors added to their lead as Levon Hawreliak scored on a 1-yard TD run 45 seconds after the Lagimodiere score. Samadi added his second field goal to make it 20-8 Edmonton at halftime.

The Wildcats put the finishing touches on third place as Tylor Henry, who had 6 catches for 126 yards scored on a 36-yard major to make it 27-8 Edmonton after 3. Regina showed a spark as veteran pass catcher Will Heward reeled in a 72-yard pass from Hastings, who left the game with an arm injury. But it would be too little, too late for Regina as they finish the year at 4-4 and meet Calgary in a semi-final contest next weekend. The 5-3 Wildcats head to Saskatoon in the other semi-final.

CALGARY COLTS          30

SASKATOON HILLTOPS    19                                 OCTOBER 7 MCMAHON STADIUM

For the second time in four seasons, McMahon Stadium played host to a first place showdown as the Colts hosted the Hilltops. For the Hilltops, they needed a 3-point victory to claim first place outright as the Colts won their previous meeting 32-30 back in the season’s opening week.

The Colts got off to a hot start as Kalon Bauman took the opening kickoff and ran it all the way back, 107 yards for the touchdown just 16 seconds into the game. But the defending national champions righted themselves on their opening drive as they took it down to the Calgary 17, where Saskatoon would settle for a 24-yard field goal from Zach Schmidt. The Hilltops would take the lead at the tail end of the quarter as John Trumpy picked up his 2nd touchdown of 2012 as he took an 18-yard touchdown toss from Matt Karpinka to go out in front 10-7 after 1.

Calgary would rebound with the lone score of the second period as backup quarterback Jeremy Long plunged in from a yard out to put the Colts ahead 14-10 at the break. Saskatoon had the wind advantage in the third quarter and would re-take the lead as Andre Lalonde, who ran for 99 yards rumbled downfield on a 44-yard touchdown run to give the Hilltops a 2-point lead. The convert try failed as the snap squirted through Matt Karpinka’s hands. A Schmidt field goal gave the Hilltops the lead they needed as they led by 5 at 19-14. However, the Colts drove into the wind which gusted up to over 50 km/h and moved out in front by 2 with 4:49 left in the quarter as Nik Petros hauled in a 7-yard pass from Derek Cooper who threw for 297 yards.

The Colts garnered all 9 points in the final frame in a 2:20 span as they forced Schmidt to concede a safety, and then Ben Hnatiuk put the exclamation mark on an undefeated regular season with a 16-yard connection from Cooper. The Colts host Regina in one semi-final, while Saskatoon hosts the Wildcats in the other semi-final.
