The Sun, Raiders and Rebels win in the opening week

Week 1 Summary

The Raiders held serve collecting 423 offensive yards beating the Broncos in the opener.  New quarterback Jacob Laberge completed 12 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns.  Dustin Rodriguez caught one of them and 111 yards in all.  On the ground Nathan Berg scored a touchdown on 19 carries and tallied 114 yards.  The Raiders defence collected four sacks and four takeaways.

The Broncos new quarterback Colby Henkel recorded 119 yards on 16 completions and threw a touchdown to Brett Ablitt.   Henkel also rushed for 39 yards without All-Canadian Jacob Palmarin in the line-up.

Each team ran back a kick for a touchdown.  The Raiders’ Josh Paisley returned a punt 85 yards, while the Broncos’ Jordon Angove returned a kick-off 101 yards for a major

Valley Huskers 14

The new look Sun offence scored five touchdowns, while the defence scored three in a dominating performance over the Valley Huskers.  The defence allowed just 194 yards of total offence and returned three interceptions for touchdowns.  Beck Fullerton, Jamie Turek and Elias Rodriguez accounted for the scores.  Foster Martens and Keith Zyla shared the quarterbacking duties.  Zyla was perfect on all four of his passes, three of them for touchdowns, while Martens was three of five and ran 26 yards for a score.

Huskers’ quarterback Noah Falconer completed 14 passes for 169 yards and threw touchdowns to Blake Draper and RJ Begg.
The Sun (1-0) stay on the road next weekend and will visit the Kamloops Broncos (0-1) and the Huskers (0-1) welcome the Langley Rams (0-1).

It was a good old fashion shoot out as both teams combined for 752 yards of total offence.  56 of the 76 points scored happened in the second half.

Rebels quarterback Ashton McKinnon completed just 11 passes for 141 yards and threw a touchdown to Kain Melchior.  The ground game was outstanding gaining 296 yards and three majors as Trey Campbell had a game high 112 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Jamel Lyles had a great debut rushing for a touchdown and returned a kick-off 98 yards for a major.

The Rebels defence recorded three sacks and forced the Rams into five turnovers.

The Rams used new quarterback Stephen Legare as he completed 20 passes for 265 yards and a pair a touchdown passes to Khalik Johnson.  However Legare threw four interceptions.

The defence got into the scoring as Brendan Desjardine recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

The Rebels (1-0) will host the VI Raiders (1-0) on Saturday while the Rams (0-1) face the Valley Huskers (0-1) in Chilliwack.
