CJFL Recap: Road teams dominate in BC

Week 7 of the British Columbia Football Conference belonged to the road teams as the Raiders, Rams and Sun all pick up victories.

The closest game on the scoreboard was between the Langley Rams and Chilliwack Huskers. The Rams came into the night on a three game winning streak, while the hometown Huskers were still searching for their first win of the year.

After a 3-0 Rams halftime lead they would outscore the Huskers 17-7 in the second half on route to a 20-7 win, raising their record to 4-3.

Quarterback Brandon Leyh was good enough to get the victory finishing six of 13 for 93 yards and a touchdown to Nick Downey while back-up Jon Roney was four of five for 75 yards. Downey would make three catches for 76 yards and Daniel English also made three receptions for 49 yards.

On the ground Kyle Albertini had a game high nine carries for 77 yards, while Leyh scrambled seven times for 54 yards and a major.

The Huskers kept the game close as quarterback Adann Hendrickson came off an injury finishing 16 of 37 for 208 yards and a touchdown. He would also run seven times for 52 yards. Hendrickson would connect with Peter Johns four times for 56 yards and the only Huskers TD.

The Rams defence would record two more sacks and have eight in their last two games. Charles Scott had five tackles while Andrew Dohery and Arie Nakagawa recorded the sacks.

With the win the Rams move into sole possession of third place in the conference.

Also in the BCFC the Okanagan Sun shutout the Westshore Rebels 69-0, while the Vancouver Island Raiders beat the Kamloops Broncos 77-4.

The Windsor AKO Fratmen went on the road to Nelson Stadium in Burlington and came out winners by a score of 28-14.

It was another slow start for the Fratmen, as they trailed 3-0 early on. It was late in the first quarter as QB Christian Hackney hooked up with WR Derrick Hurst on a 55 yard scoring pass. Dan Colella made the convert, and AKO led 7-3 after 1 quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Braves turned the tide and pinned AKO back on several occasions. The Braves would eventually grab a 13-7 lead. SB Joel Archer scored on an 89-yard run play, and with the extra point by Colella it was 14-13 Fratmen. A Braves missed FG resulted in a half time tie at 14.

In the second half it was all AKO, as they took the ball to start the 3rd quarter and drove down to the Burlington 30 yard line before settling for a Dan Colella 38 yard FG. After a Jake Nicoletti interception AKO Colella booted another FG, this one from 18 yards out.

With the score now 20-14 for AKO, it was RB Beau Lumley’s turn to reach the end zone. Beau took a handoff 33 yards to pay dirt making the score 26-14. Coach LaChance elected to go for the 2-pt. convert, and it was Hackney hooking up with Hurst again, this time for the 2 points.

Also in the OFC the Hamilton Hurricanes defeated the Ottawa Sooners 27-10, while the St Leonard Cougars beat the Brampton Bears 32-6 and the London Beefeaters edged the Twin Cities Predators 19-12.

The two unbeaten teams in the Prairie Football Conference clashed at McMahon Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the national champions Saskatoon Hilltops met the Calgary Colts. The game did live up to its billing as it was a defensive struggle as the Toppers prevailed 22-15.

Saskatoon erased a 4-0 first quarter deficit as they scored 15 unanswered in the second stanza as Regan Schuler ran in from a yard out & Chad Braun had an 11-yard TD grab. Receiver Mac Sarro drew the Colts to within 4 as he had a 27-yard 3rd quarter TD catch, but Toppers pivot Chase Bradshaw called his own number and ran 49 yards to clinch the win.

The Regina Thunder had a 31-9 halftime lead in their game against Winnipeg on the strength of 4 Wyatt Catley TD passes, 3 of those to Will Heward, but the Rifles scored 20 unanswered points to pull within 2. Winnipeg had the ball in Thunder territory in the final minute, but back to back penalties took them out of field goal range and a 3rd & 34 desperation pass fell incomplete. Catley threw for 268 yards on the day, while Ryan Marsch of Winnipeg went 24 of 52 for 365 yards and 2 more majors, giving him a CJFL league leading 22. A house fire broke out near Mosaic Stadium during the second half as a plume of smoke was seen rising over the park.

The Edmonton Wildcats won β€œThe Black and Blue Bowl” on Saturday night as they downed their Clarke Park co-tenants, the Huskies 30-19. Coming into the contest, both clubs were 0-4.

Wildcats tailback Taylor Souster ran wild, picking up 213 yards on 25 carries, scoring a touchdown. Receiver & part-time pivot Andrew Johnson had a TD snag.

Anthony Barrett & Zach Wilkie each scored majors for the Huskies who fall to 0-5.
