Cody gives credit to his father for getting him into football at a very young age.
“My dad Brian was the driving force behind starting a football team at my high school Earl Marriott Secondary so I did not have to go play somewhere out of town,” explains Cody. “I fell in the love with the game and never looked back.”
With the Mariners, the linebacker experienced the highlight of his career.
“My most memorable football experience was my last regular season game as a senior in high school, where we went on the road and beat a rival in Mission Secondary to clinch a playoff spot,” comments the defensive standout. “It was my best game in high school where I rushed for 28 times for 292 yards and four touchdowns while having eight tackles and an interception.”
With the North Delta Longhorns Cody won a provincial championship with the team. After winning the championship, the star linebacker moved out east and committed to playing for the Saint Mary’s Huskies of the CIS. After a year and a half with the team, Cody felt that it was time to move back West as things did not pan out with the Huskies. This past season, the British Columbia native suited up for the Chilliwack Huskers of the BCFC.
Five weeks into the season with the Huskers, Cody who was leading the league in tackles injured his leg during a game against the Vancouver Island Raiders. However, there was a silver lining to the injury as he remembers the exact quote from the history breaking events that took place.
“In week 5 versus the Vancouver Island Raiders, I broke a BCFC record for defensive points,” explains the Huskers standout. “βHillhouse had a terrific game against the defending champion Raiders; he would make seven solo tackles, five assists, three special teams tackles, one special teams assist and one fumble recovery.””
“”His 28 defensive points would establish a new team record and are the most in a BCFC game since 2008.””
Next season, Cody will get a chance to rewrite the university script as he’s recently committed to the University of Alberta. Not only did the defensive star get to enroll in January, but he also has had the chance to train and work with the coaches while meeting the players.
“Coach Stead was very involved in my recruiting process and helped with any questions my parents or I had and was a big help,” says the future Golden Bears player who will study physical education at the campus. “I met with him in Vancouver for Vanier Cup Week.”
“The biggest factor was the opportunity to come in and play right away and play against the top competition in Canada, especially Canada West.”
All the success Cody has achieved on the field would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of his father Brian and his mother Terry.
“They have done so much for me in my football career and life in general and I wouldnβt be where Iβm at today without them and for that I am very thankful,” adds the Huskers linebacker.
When it comes to football, Cody has lofty goals he wishes to achieve with regards to his game and career.
“I play the game with a non-stop motor and love the physical aspect of the game of football,” says the standout. “I hope to play football as long as I can and will continue to push myself to get an opportunity at the next level.”
As he prepares for a brand new start at the University of Alberta, Cody will continue to use the things he’s learned from the gridiron in the hopes it will guide him to further success.
“Football has taught me discipline, hard work and so many other things,” comments Cody. “There is nothing like going to war with 11 other teammates working towards one common goal.”
“Here at the University of Alberta, we have a lot of great young talent and I know you will see that in the next couple years and it all starts next year.”
