Commitment: University of Saskatchewan

Prior to Geoff’s football career he was a competitive gymnast for eight years, winning a national championship in 2006. He credits the discipline, physical and mental training of gymnastics helping his football. He has played football for 6 years. He played linebacker for Team Saskatchewan and Campbell, and receiver in the 2010 Regina spring league.

His most memorable football experiences were winning a National Championship, with the provincial championship being a close second. “2010 was an amazing football year with a championship win after each season. During the summer, traveling to Nova Scotia was a great experience in itself, but winning in the final against Quebec made it that much better. During the high school season, I broke my finger in the second game, which required surgery and the insertion of three screws. I missed four games, but was fortunate to come back and play in the remaining league game, playoffs, city and provincial finals. My high school team, the Campbell Tartans won the city championship against Regina Sheldon Williams. We went on to win the Saskatchewan provincial title after beating the Saskatoon Centennial Chargers in OT.”

His most influential people have been high school coaches. “Ron Cherkas, Ryan Hall and Cory Huclack. Coach Cherkas believed in me since I was in grade 9 and conveyed the importance of weight training and working hard. Coach Hall gave me a better understanding of the game and Coach Huclack, who plays for the Riders, was a role model who gives a different perspective on the game because he is younger and still playing.”

“My entire family has been very supportive. With four kids in my family, my parents, Marianne and David, manage to come to all of my games. However, it was my sister, Kaitlyn, who convinced me to try out for the U18 Canada Cup because she said it would be a missed opportunity. She plays CIS volleyball and encourages me to work hard.”
