With rugby being David’s main sport growing up, he decided to give football a try in 2011. This past season was a successful breakout campaign for the kicker as he played for his high school team, the Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars of the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League (NSSAFFL).

While it may have only been his first season in the league, his talents did not go unnoticed. The NSSAFFL awarded him as league’s most outstanding kicker/punter this past year. Also, he experienced a special unforgettable moment in 2011.

“My most memorable moment in football would be the CEC home opener which was my first game,” comments the graduating kicker. “The coach put me in as starting kicker and went 3 for 3 in field goals.”

David would not have been able to achieve such breakthrough success without the motivation of his football influence, Cougars head Scott Annand.

“He’s tough but always encouraged me to be the best I could be,” adds David.
However, in life, his main influences are his parents.

“They have been very supporting and encouraging in every sport I have played,” says the graduating athlete.

As an accomplished rugby player, David brings his wealth of experience and achievements to the gridiron. While playing for the Nova Scotia provincial rugby team in Easterns, the coach from the Newfoundland provincial team was impressed by what he saw on the field.

Even though Nova Scotia did not go to the nationals, David was asked to join the Newfoundland under-16 team. For three weeks he trained in Newfoundland with the team and then spent one week in Calgary at the tourney. At nationals, David was a starting fullback.

In his first season in the sport, he was rookie of the year. Additionally, the star athlete was invited to the national men’s under-17 camp in Montreal and was team backs MVP of his high school squad at Cobequid. Most recently, David has played for the Truro Saints rugby team and was named rookie of theyear this past fall.

Even though David has played football for a brief period, he has enjoyed the benefits of participating in the game.

“I said many times that I wish I had played earlier,” adds David. “I had a very successful season, learned a lot of skills and made many friends.”

Annand says the kicker impressed from the moment he arrived at the Cougars practice.

“He was basically a walk on who we discovered in practice could kick,” explains the Cougars head coach. “He did show a lot of improvement over the course of the season and has a naturally strong leg.”
