Even though he may have only started playing football in grade 10, John-Paul has made a significant impact on his high school team in the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Football Federation League (NSSAFFL), the Avon View Avalanche.

Among the numerous awards the Avalanche running back has been honoured with are team rookie of the year (2009), team offensive (2010, 2011) and special teams MVP (2011).

This past season supplied John-Paul with memorable moments of his football career. In his senior year, the Avalanche achieved success in the NSSAFFL and reached the Tier 2 playoffs for the first time since joining the league.

“Our season ended in playoffs with a heartfelt loss in a game where we gave it everything we had but unfortunately came up short,” explains John-Paul who scored the only four Avalanche touchdowns in that game. “We achieved the best record our school has ever had since it’s been opened and my football experience this year wasn’t just with other players but in the end they were family and I would do anything for them.”

“It would be hard to single out one moment in this unforgettable season.”

Avalanche head coach Rory Campbell has been the biggest football influence on John-Paul.

“I have never had a better coach than him throughout all my years in playing all the different sports and he showed me how to really love the game of football,” adds the graduating running back.

He’s also had the support and encouragement of his parents and sister while pursuing all goals on and off the field.

“They have been there for me through everything, the good and bad and I am forever grateful to their respect,” says John-Paul.

Moreover, the Avalanche star is passionate about sports. Not only does he play football, but he has competed in basketball, rugby, swimming, kayaking, karate, volleyball and soccer.

“I’ve never limited myself to only one sport because I am too competitive to do so,” comments the running back who also student council co-prime at his school. “I take pride in saying that I give everything I have to what I commit to.”

As for future plans, John-Paul will continue his studies at the university level as he plans to pursue a degree in human kinetics/kinesiology. His future career goal is to be a doctor specializing in sports medicine or an expert in the field.

While he strives to achieve future goals, the graduating Avalanche star will take what he’s learned from the game of football to help him in attaining those goals.

“Especially from this last year, I’ve learned that nothing comes easy and with determination almost anything is achievable,” explains John-Paul who says he takes his studies seriously and likes to maintain a high academic standard. “My work ethic has improved so much with everything our coaches constantly teach us that time management is so important especially with maintaining our marks in school.”

Avalanche head coach Campbell is in awe of how much talent the standout possesses on and off the field.

“JP is an exceptional young man,” says Campbell. “He’s an incredible athlete, great student, and a real leader at school.”

“He is a multi-sport athlete who can pick things up very quickly.”

Moving over to the running back position with the Avalanche this past season, John-Paul did not look out of sorts. As Campbell points out, the graduating player looked like a seasoned veteran playing in the position.

Furthermore, the Avalanche head coach believes John-Paul can dress on a future Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) team in his first year and contribute as a special team’s player.

“Moreover, he has the work-ethic that will allow him to flourish as he grows into a system,” adds Campbell. “He isa quality young man and has a bright future ahead of him both on and off the field.”
