For the past 11 years, Melvin has played on several different teams including the Hamilton Ironmen of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), the Hamilton Hurricanes of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) and his high school team, the Sherwood Secondary Saints.

While playing for the Hurricanes, the defensive star was a force to be reckoned with and many opposing teams took notice. In the 2011 season, Melvin started as a rookie defensive end for the Hurricanes in the provincial championship. Moreover, the defensive standout is a league provincial champion and has the dubious distinction of playing in the Canadian Bowl (CJFL Nationals) as a 17 year old rookie.

Among the accolades Melvin has received over the course of his career include team defensive lineman of the year and team defensive player of the year. Recently, the Hurricanes defensive end was selected to the Golden Horseshoe team that will participate in the all-star game on May 6th at McMaster University. Also, he will play in the upcoming East versus West Bowl high school all-star game.

Melvin experienced his most memorable football moment when he was 14 years of age.

“My most memorable experience is getting 5.5 sacks my very first game in my first year on the senior football team for high school,” says Melvin. “I became rookie of the year that year ending off the season with a league leading 17.5 sacks.”

The Hurricanes defensive standout says that he tries to mirror his playing style to New York Giants defensive star Jason Pierre-Paul and Chicago Bears enforcer Julius Peppers.

“I love his (Pierre Paul) story and I like to compare myself to him and Julius Peppers,” adds Melvin. “‘I’m a loud mouth player but can back up my words and I can read an offense faster before they’re even fully set up.”

“I like to come out of a two or four point stance.”

Overall, the main influence in his life is his mother.

“She has been through so much and is still standing strong with pride,” explains the graduating defensive star. “Nothing can tear her down and I respect her so much for what she has done.”

As for goals, Melvin has academic, gridiron and career ones he would like to attain in the near future.

“As of right now I am striving to complete school, make it to university and tear up the next level,” says the Hurricanes standout. “I plan on graduating college or university with a policing degree and becoming an officer.”

No matter where he plays next or how life will unfold for Melvin, he will take the things learned from football and use them to be successful in all aspects of life.

“I’ve learned to be calm, show great discipline and poise,” comments Melvin. “I’ve learned to be a stronger man and more mature as an athlete and a human being.”
