Class 2013: Hard work and dedication equals success for Eric Mezzalira

Today, CFC features class 2013 star linebacker from the Cardinal Newman Cardinals, Eric Mezzalira. Eric started playing football since he was 10 years old.

Eric started playing for the Stoney Creek Bombers of the Hamilton Minor Football Association (HMFA) and remained there for four seasons. During his time there, he was team defensive MVP twice. Moreover, the linebacker played one season with the Burlington Invictas.

For three seasons, Eric suited up for the Steel City Steelers of the Ontario Minor Football League (OMFL). The standout was team defensive MVP. Now going into his second season with the Steel City Ironmen of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), he has already made an impact in his rookie campaign as he was week four defensive MVP. Moreover, Eric was named most outstanding running back at the Steel City Bowl.

Additionally, the linebacker excelled while spending four seasons with his high school team, the Cardinal Newman Cardinals. While on the junior Cardinals team, Eric was offensive MVP and experienced a special moment as he won his first football championship in grade nine. He was also senior team MVP.

Most recently, Eric has been selected to the Golden Horseshoe team that will participate in the all-star game against the GTA Rising Stars team at McMaster University on May 6th.

There are many people that have played a role in Eric’s life.

“My family, friends, and coaches are the most influential people in life and in football,” says the Cardinals linebacker.

Away from the field, Eric excels in the classroom as he’s won academic and mathematics awards. Beyond high school, the standout would like to pursue a degree in social sciences. As for future career goals, he is interested in three possible areas: policing, teaching and accounting.

Whether it’s excelling in the classroom or out on the field, Eric will take what he’s learned from the game of football use it to be successful.

“I’ve learned that hard work and dedication is all you need to succeed at anything in life,” comments Eric.
