Class 2013: Mark Horta displays continual defensive excellence

Today, CFC profiles class 2013 defensive star from the St. Marcellinus Spirit, Mark Horta. Mark started his football career in 2007.

Since 2007, Mark has been recognized for his talents on the field. During his time with the Central Mississauga Cougars of the Mississauga Football League (MFL), he was team outstanding rookie in 2007 and team outstanding defensive player in 2008.

Continuing his exceptional play on the field with the Mississauga Warriors of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), Mark was team defensive MVP (2008, 2010) and team defensive line MVP (2010).

As a bright spot on his high school team, the St.Marcellinus Spirit, the standout was team lineman in 2009 and school athlete of the year in 2011. A special moment in Mark’s career took place in 2011 Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) junior championshipwhen he caught the game winning touchdown.

Most recently, the football star was selected to the GTA Rising Stars team that will participate in the all-star game at McMaster University on May 6th. He will play in the tight end position at this year’s game. Mark also played in the all-star game last year as a defensive end.

The main influences in the Spirit’s star’s life has been his parents and brother.

β€œMy brother started playing football in high school; I went to his first game and I immediately knew I wanted to play,”explains Mark. β€œMy brother is always encouraging me to work out and making sure I can do my best on the field.”

β€œMy parents have supported me in all the sports I wanted to play, they have given me the opportunity to play them all and have driven me to every game and practice.”

Away from the gridiron, Mark is also a track and field athlete. He is a shot put and discus thrower. In grade nine and ten, the star athlete placed first in discus at ROPSSAA.

Beyond high school, the Spirit star athlete would like to continue playing football in university while he pursues a degree in business. In achieving all his future goals, Mark will incorporate time management, team work and respect skills he’s learned from the game.
