Clow, Thomas and Szilagyi selected as Week 1 AUS Football Players of the Week

September 14, 2010 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Receiver Stu Clow and Defensive Lineman Jake Thomas of the No. 10 ranked Acadia Axemen, along with Mount Allison Mounties kicker John Szilagyi have been selected as the Atlantic University Sport Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 12th, 2010.

Receiver Stu Clow of the No. 10 ranked Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 12th, 2010. Clow, a fourth year student from Dartmouth, NS, caught five passes for 47 yards and a pair of key touchdowns as the Axemen opened their season with a 17-7 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Quarterback Kyle Graves found Clow from 22 yards out in the second quarter and again from the 16 yard line late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Clow also added 41 yards on six punt returns in the win.

Acadia defensive lineman Jake Thomas is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 12, 2010. Thomas, a third year student from Douglas, NB, recorded 7.5 tackles including 1.5 tackles for a loss and was credited with a half sack in the Axemen’s 17-7 season-opening win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies this past weekend. Jake, who’s older brother Josh was the 1998 AUS Lineman of the Year, was a member of Football Canada’s National Junior Team in 2009. His 7.5 tackles currently leads all AUS defensive lineman after the first weekend of play.

Punter and place kicker John Szilagyi of the Mount Allison Mounties is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Szilagyi, a first year player from Winnipeg, MB, accounted for 17 of the Mounties’ 19 points this past weekend in a 19-6 homecoming victory over the StFX X-Men in Sackville, NB. John connected on 5-of-7 field goal attempts and added a pair of singles in the win. He also averaged 31.7 yards on seven punts and 49.5 yards on two kickoffs. Szilagyi’s five field goals tied the Mount Allison single-game school record set by Olivier Eddie in 2008.
