Coaching uncertainty in the CIS: 46% turnover of Head Coaches since 2010

Since 2010 there has been a 46% turnover rate of Head Coaching positions in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Football. Is this good or bad? Is it natural evolution? Is it a sign of things to come?

Most of this movement has been in the Quebec conference (RSEQ) and Ontario conference (OUA), seeing both conferences change more than half of their Head Coaches. Since 2010 the following Head Coaching positions have changed:

In the 2011/2012 off season their will be 6 new head coaches anointed…including the new team at Carleton. According to press releases or press reports here are the rumoured front-runners:

Windsor

Interim Head Coach Joe D’amore was OUA coach of the year and has been endorsed by Athletic Director Gord Grace…yet a committee shall determine his fate.

Waterloo

Dennis McPhee’s recent departure has opened up the position, yet a press release from the University made it sound like Joe Paopao, Marshall Bingeman and Kani Kauahi are taking over.

Toronto

After Greg Delaval left the program last year they put Greg Gary in charge along with assistants Donnavan Carter and John Engel. Engel is no longer with the program and Toronto Sun has said Adam Rita is interested in the job.

Carleton

This new hybrid-modeled program will begin on the field of play in 2013 but will hire a football coach this January 2012. The program has used an external ‘search firm’ to vet the candidates and the Ottawa media has made no indication of potential candidates.

Bishop’s

According to French Sherbrooke newspaper La Tribune here are the candidates applying and not applying. Not applying include Benoit Groulx, Peter Chrysommalis, and Pat Gregory. Applying for the job include “Ray Gagnon, Brent Bailey and possibly Steve Lalonde”.

Sherbrooke

After coach Andre Bolduc left the program after 5 years at the helm, much speculation of who the next candidate has come about. The French Sherbrooke newspaper La Tribune indicated that Laval defensive coordinator Marc Fortier has declined interest in the job. Internal full-time head coach candidates include defensive coordinator Marc Loranger, offensive coordinator David Lessard, and special teams coordinator Jean-Vincent Posy-Audette.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
