Niagara falls to bantam Stamps
The Burlington bantam Stampeders won the COMFL home opener on Sunday against the Niagara Generals 24-8.
The Stampeders ran for a total of 275 yards with their offence led by Nick Langley with 176 rushing yards, bringing home one touchdown for the team. Two Burlington holding penalties resulted in two of Langleyβs touchdowns being called back. Dominic Mandalfino ran for 85 yards, putting the Stamps other two majors on the board. Both Langley and Mandalfinoβs success on the ground was a direct result of the dominant play of fullback Jason Uleryk-Carvalho. Burlington had three successful convert attempts by Nick Casola.
Burlingtonβs strong defence held the Generals back for almost the entire game. Zachary Hoffner and George Jeffrey led the way with 12 and 11 tackles respectively and Jack Miller with 9 tackles. Strong defensive support came from AJ Allen and Jason Uleryk-Carvalho. An interception by JD Foxcroft and a fumble recovery by Evan Luckie rounded out Burlingtonβs powerhouse defence.
The Niagara Generals were unable to put any points on the board during the first half of the game yesterday and managed to score only one touchdown and the convert with 9:55 left in the fourth quarter.
A strong showing out of the gate for the Bantam Stampeders who travel next Sunday to face the Oshawa Hawkeyes.
Peewees pull away in close match against Niagara
The Burlington Stampeder peewee team dominated in a running attack on the Niagara Generals at their home opener this past Sunday with a final score 31-18 for the home team.
The Stamps had excellent production on offence with two touch downs each for Matt Paul with 22 carries for 129 yards and Myles Manalo with 13 carries and 124 yards. The most electrifying was a fourth down completion from quarterback Kurtis Rourke to Ethan Stokes to secure the win. The team was reluctant to punt, and successfully converted on fourth down, two other times during the game.
Special teams contributed to the excellent field position. Mike Shea had 54 yards in kick off returns. The punt return team shut down Niagara four of the six punts.
The defence dominated the game allowing only 33 yards in the second half and zero points for the Generals. Head Coach, Peter Malon said, βIβm proud of the strong team effort in the second half.
Michael Lehmann changed the gameβs momentum twice with fumble recoveries. Manalo led in defense with seven tackles, Paul added four more.
Atom Stamps lose battle the Niagara Generals
The Burlington atom Stampeders opened their 2011 season this past weekend against the Niagara Generals in the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) with a 33-6 loss.
The Generals opened the scoring at the 10:32 mark of the first quarter when they ran the ball for a 55-yard touchdown. The convert attempt was good.
Shortly after, rookie quarterback James Chedore tossed the ball to Jayden Dunnik for an 11 yard touchdown run, which turned out to be the only Stampeder score of the game. The offence led by Cavan McLellan, Jayden Dunnik and Chedore combined for a total of 98 rushing yards.
Niagara scored three more TDβs and were good on two of the converts.
The defence, led by Zachary Ihasz and Justin Gec (13 and 12 tackles respectively), came out strong in the season opener. All other members of the defense contributed to the tackle total.
βThe score does not reflect the closeness of this gameβ said head coach Jordan Johnston βI am proud of the way our boys came out and competed, especially in the second half. Although we did not win our home opener, our opponent definitely felt the physical brand of football that our team will continue to bring week in and week out. We will now focus our efforts to next Sunday were we hope to even our record vs the Oshawa Hawkeyes.β
All three teams will travel to Oshawa next Sunday, August 28.
