COMFL: Stampeders deliver two shut outs to Oshawa

All three Burlington Stampeders teams, atom, peewee and bantams delivered shut outs to the Oshawa Hawkeyes last Sunday. For the atoms, who had lost their season opener, it was a good sign that the season is turning around for them.

The Burlington Atom Stampeders improved their record to 1 – 1 with a convincing 24 – 0 victory over the Oshawa Hawkeyes last Sunday in Oshawa.

Oshawa had control of the ball to start the game, but the powerful Stampeder defence caused a fumble which was recovered by Kenny Sproat. From then on, Burlington’s offence controlled the ball for most of the game. The QB tandem of Jayden Dunnik and James Chedore marched the ball down the field resulting in a two-yard touchdown run by Cavan McLellan. Zachary Ihasz was able to recover Burlington’s kick-off resulting in a one-yard touchdown scramble for Justin Gec. The ensuing kick-off by Sproat’s kick-off was recovered by Ihasz again. This time, the drive scored with a 21-yard Dunnik. The score at the half was 18 -0. The Hawkeyes defence adjusted at the break and were able to hold Burlington scoreless in the third. The Stamps scored again in the fourth on 45-yard run by Gec. The offence racked up 263 rushing yards and 26 passing yards. Gec (160), Dunnik (103) and McLellan (21) led the team in rushing.

Burlington’s defence saw limited playing time but they made up for it when on the field. Kade Butt had two quarterback sacks, Gec ,five tackles, Ihasz added four, and Jack Hourigan three. Joshua Meuirs and Sproat had two tackles each. Jack Rieger, Wyatt Sayers and Jayden Griffin all contributed one each.
