COMFL: Stampeders’ fourth consecutive sweep


Stampeders traveled to Scarborough on Sunday to face the Thunder and pulled off another sweep, the fourth in a row. That leaves the peewee and bantams undefeated with 5-0 records and the atoms 4-1 in the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL).


Atoms shut out Thunder

The atom Stamps came away with a convincing 33 – 0 win. Burlington scored on their first drive of the game at the 7:29 mark when Justin Gec was handed the ball from Jayden Dunnik and ran the ball 12 yards for the touchdown. An injury forced Dunnink to hand over the QB duties to backup James Chedore, who continued what Dunnink started . Two more hand offs to Gec were good for majors, at 5:43 and 3:47 in the 2nd quarter. Zachary Ihasz completed a 30 yard pass to John Lewczuk late in the 4th quarter for the last touchdown of the game. A total of 346 rushing yards were accumulated by the stamps with Gec leading the way with 255. Sean Stodulski (33), Lewczuk (23), Chedore (21), Ihasz (7), Cavan McLellan (6) and Dunnink (1) contributed to the totals.

The Stampeder defence gave up only 16 yards to the Thunder in this their third shutout of the season. Gec lead with six tackles and two interceptions. Ihasz added three tackles, Kenny Sproat another two. On special teams, Sproat kicked for a total of 100 yards and Meuris contribute nine points to the score as he was good on three of four converts.
β€œHats off to our defence.” said head Coach Jordan Johnston after Sunday’s win. β€œ We gave up under 20 yards all game and that was all in the first half. Our kids are doing the two most important things in football pretty well right now -blocking and tackling.”

Peewee Stamps come from behind to remain undefeated

The peewee Stamps were down by a score at the end of the first half against their Scarborough counterparts. With half-time adjustments, they came on strong in the second half to win 38-27.
Matt Paul and Myles Manalo both scored two touchdowns, Paul with 22 carries for 177 yards and Manalo on 17 carries for 124 yards. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke scrambled for a major and passed for 86 yards. Most of those yards came on an electric 55-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Stokes. Benjamijn Zwolak caught two passes for 27 yards. Cody Baker was good for three of four convert attempts and James Condon was perfect on his one convert attempt.

On defence Kellen Butt, Ben Lack and Anthony Pereira each contributed three tackles,Manalo picked off a Scarborough pass and ran it 17 yards and Devan Dhindsa recovered a fumble.

Bantam Stamps dominate Thunder

The Bantam Stampeders dominated the Scarborough team 49-9 and continue undefeated for the season.

The bantams were lead by Nathan Rourke who had a strong performance in pivot made possible with protection from the offensive line. Nick Langley ran for 176 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Connor Knight caught a five- yard pass for a touchdown and Nick Casola put two more on the board.

The Burlington defence worked together to shut down the Thunder offence for the day. Jake Dorio had a fumble recovery and an interception. An interception by Zach Hoffner, fumble recovery by Jack Miller and a QB sack by Dominic Mandalfino along with a great effort by George Jeffrey, Jordan Veltri and Jason Uleryk-Carvalho rounded out the defence.

The Stampeders have a bye next weekend and then host the Markham Raiders on October 2nd at Nelson.
