COMFL: Stampeders keep sweep streak alive and in the pink


The Stampeders logged sweep number seven with a win against visiting Scarborough Thunder, a team known for strength and speed as they marked breast cancer awareness with a day of pink and fundraising to contribute to Jo Brant Hospital. The players from both teams opened each game with a ceremony with their moms. Atom head coach Jordan Johnston shaved his head for pledges, parents pledged for each lap of the track they walked before the game and raffles all contributed to the proceeds. The Stampeders appreciate the amazing community support they received for this effort.

Atoms rush to win

The Atom Stampeders finished their regular season with a strong 53 – 6 win over the Scarborough Thunder and ended the season with a 7 – 1 record.

Scarborough scored on their first drive of the game to go up 6 – 0 and those were the only points the Burlington defence would allow Scarborough recording 22 tackles, led by Zach Ihasz with nine. Evan Unwin and Justin Gec added four each. The defence also contributed to Burlington scoring with Jack Hourigan’s safety late the first half.

Burlington’s offence was led by powerhouse Gec who rushed for an incredible 332 yards scoring four majors. Ihsaz contributed 44 yards and Cavan McLellan another 17 along with a touchdown each.

Special teams also showed their strength on Sunday. Joshua Meuris was good on five converts on six attempts . Kenny Sproat had a handful of kickoffs that pinned Scarborough deep in their end. Ihasz, Gec and Kade Butt each returned Thunder kick offs for a combined 23 yards. James Chedore recovered a Sproat kick to allow Burlington to regain control of the ball.
β€œToday was a feel good game for our team and program. We continue to improve weekly on the fundamentals of football and as a coach; this is all I can ask for.” said head coach Jordan Johnston after the game. β€œEvery week we are being pleasantly surprised with new kids stepping up and making an impact”.

Burlington finishes the regular season in second place and has a bye this weekend awaiting the winner of the Brampton – Oshawa game.

Peewees shut out Thunder

The peewee Stamps defence was stingy, very stingy on Sunday as they recorded their second shut out of the season. The team allowed only 44 yards total, five in the second half. The third quarter, the Thunder did not ever touch the ball.

Charlie George led the defensive effort with six tackles, Devan Dhindsa added four and Anthony Pereira had a fumble recovery when Scarborough did have possession.

With so much time of possession, the Stampeders had time to make plays. Myles Manalo rushed for 132 yards in 12 caries scoring two majors. Matt Paul added another touchdown with 101 yards in 18 carries. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke threw a 44-yard touchdown completion to Carson Foxcroft for the score. Shaiene Baker was perfect on both of his point after kicks while James Condon made one too.

The peewees finish the regular season undefeated.

Bantam Stampeders end perfect regular season

Bantam Stampeders finish their regular season 8 and 0. Every Bantam Stampeder sported pink socks in honour of cancer awareness as they beat the Scarborough Thunder 36-26 on Sunday during Burlington’s Stamp Out Cancer Event.

The stingy Burlington defence held the Thunder scoreless in the first half of the game Sunday. Jack Miller and Zachary Hoffner led the tackling with ten each, Hoffner recorded a QB sack. Evan Luckie had a sack as well as six tackles, Jax Ford added eight more tackles and George Jeffery blocked a convert in addition to seven tackles. Dominic Mandalfino added a sack along nine tackles, a blocked convert and a QB sack in addition to rushing for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Nick Langley scored two majors with 174 yards rushing. Jason Uleryk-Carvalho caught a 31-yard pass to add a fifth TD on the board. Nick Casola had three successful converts.

The Burlington Stampeders will have a bye this weekend during the Central Ontario Minor Football League (COMFL) quarter finals and will play in the semi-final game on October 30th.
