COMFL: Stamps sweep Ticats

The Burlington Braves took it on the chin in Hamilton last weekend in junior football action, but the Burlington Minor Football Association’s other travelling teams turned the tables on the host Hamilton Jr. Ticats.

The Stamps defeated the Ticats 39-12, 34-22 and 42-22 in a Central Ontario Minor Football League atom-peewee-bantam Labour Day tripleheader after the Braves lost 42-7 to the Hamilton Hurricanes in Ontario Football Conference play on Sept. 2.

The Stamps teams visit the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Atom

The Stampeders are 2-1 thanks to a win that included a great two-way performance by Justin Gec.

Gec led the offence with a 222-yard rushing day, including three touchdowns, and led the defence with eight tackles.

Other Stampeder touchdowns came from quarterback Jayden Dunnik, Cavan McLellan and Zachary Ihasz.

Ihasz chipped in on defence with six tackles.

Burlington led 27-6 at halftime.

Peewee

The Stampeders upped their record to 3-0 with the victory, after coming back from a 16-14 halftime deficit.

Burlington led by only six until a late Stamps TD put the game out of Hamilton’s reach.

Most of the edge in scoring for Burlington was through excellent kicking, with James Condon kicking two converts and Shaiene Baker adding another.

Matt Paul scored three TDs for the winners, one on a fumble recovery and two on rushes, part of a 217-yard day for the running back.

Myles Manalo added another two TDs with 98 yards rushing.

On defence, Austin Viola had seven tackles to lead Burlington with Ben Lack and Kellen Butt adding another six each.

Bantam

A 20-point margin of victory kept the Stampeders’ perfect record intact after three weeks.

Jack Miller recorded seven tackles and George Jeffrey and Zach Hoffner added six each to lead Burlington.

Dominic Mandalfino sacked the Hamilton quarterback and also recovered the ball on a short Stampeder kickoff. Jason Uleryk-Carvalho and Hoffner forced Hamilton to give up a pair of safeties with tackles in the end zone.

After giving up a touchdown on a fumbled hand off, Burlington bounced back to dominate the game.

Nick Langley rushed for three touchdowns and 229 yards, Connor Knight scored a touchdown on an 18-yard pass reception, Adrian Lortie added a 38-yard TD run and Mandalfino also scored a major.

Nick Casola hit four of five convert attempts.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
