Cougars stumble versus Stamps


The Chatham-Kent Cougars’ offensive woes resurfaced Sunday in a 34-8 loss to the Burlington Stampeders in the Ontario Football Conference’s varsity division.

One week after their first victory, the Cougars fell to 1-4-0 with the loss at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

It was the third game this season in which they failed to score an offensive touchdown.

“(I) thought we moved the ball well on the ground, but had difficulty in the air,” head coach Sel Jordan said. “We had three turnovers in the end zone. We need to have more consistency in our passing game to be effective down the stretch.”

Tim Doermer kicked field goals of 28 and 34 yards.

Mitch Rate ran 14 times for 95 yards. Mitch Hoekstra added 46 yards on seven carries.

Quarterbacks Zach Welten and Christian Hackney combined to go 13-of-27 for 163 yards.

Brendan Thompson and Josh Shuian each made six tackles. Brock Herman had five tackles, three hurries and a batted ball. Jake Langstaff had three tackles, a sack and two batted balls.

The Cougars host the Toronto Junior Argonauts this Sunday at noon at the athletic complex in their home finale.

PEEWEE:The Cougars steam-rolled another team Sunday, beating the previously undefeated Forest City Thunderbirds 35-0 for their fourth straight shutout.

The Cougars have outscored teams by a combined 168-0 for a 4-0-0 record in the OFC.

Ross Krieger had 103-and 36-yard touchdown runs at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex. Kenny Levesque and Brady Pataki caught TD passes of six and two yards, respectively. Trent Scaman also scored on a pitch.

Owen Dorssers kicked five extra points.

Krieger finished with 147 rushing yards, Pataki added 33, Liberty Rountree had 32 and Clayton Shreve had 28.

Kelton Evans completed six of nine passes for 78 yards. Nolan Ball caught three.

Dorssers, Alex Formosa, Quentin Forgie and Austin Miller were defensive standouts.

BANTAM:The Cougars lost 41- 13 to the Burlington Stampeders on Sunday at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

Brady Shepherd ran for a 77- yard touchdown in the first quarter. Christian Couture kicked the extra point.

Anthony Cunha added a 42- yard TD run in the third.

Shepherd gained 105 yards on eight carries. Cunha ran nine times for 78 yards.

Sean King made eight tackles. Daniel Allman and Tristan Logan had seven tackles apiece. Josh Collins recovered a fumble.

The Cougars’ record fell to 3-2-0 in the OFC.

JUNIOR VARSITY:The Cougars suffered their second straight defeat Sunday with a 41-7 road loss to the Oakville Titans.

The Cougars are third in the OFC with a 2-2-0 record.

Derek Miller scored their lone TD on a six-yard pass from Cole Herman. Clark Green kicked the extra point.

Blayne Bechard ran for 41 yards and had 26 receiving yards. Tanner Emery added 33 rushing yards, Sebastian Smith had 26 and Sam Tommen had 25. Green made two catches for 37 yards.

Jon Ashby was 6-of-11 for 79 yards passing. Herman also threw for 39 yards.

Jason Laprise had six tackles and a sack, Jack Cavanaugh also made six tackles, Jordan Deneau and Erich Demars made five apiece, and Myles Robinson had three and a fumble recovery.

The Cougars host the Burlington Stampeders at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.
