COVID-19: What impact does it have on the Canadian Football League?

As we all know, the outbreak of COVID-19 has had a huge effect on the sporting world. Most major sports have come to a complete standstill with leagues, event and competitions beings postponed and cancelled around the globe.

Fans canā€™t visit the stadiums to support their teams and sport betters are unable to test their knowledge and luck by betting on their sporting events. One small comfort for those who are into betting, however, is that several websites offer huge bonuses at the moment. If youā€™re looking to substitute the thrill of a placing a wager on a gripping football match, now could be the ideal time to pay a visit to an online casino.

When will the 2020 CFL Season Begin?

Originally, the 2020 Canadian Football League season was scheduled to start on June 11 and end on October 31. While the board remained optimistic for a long time that the season could still begin on this date, a recent statement from CFL commissioner, Randy Ambrosia, stated that ā€œthe 2020 season wonā€™t start before the beginning of Julyā€.

The statement also noted that they league are still hopeful they will be able to play a full season of football in 2020 or ā€œas close to one as we can comeā€. This leaves the possibility of changes to the seasonā€™s length, but the league and their associates will be doing everything they can to run a full season in 2020.

Of course, the main priority is to stop the spread of the disease so that must always be prioritized over any sporting event.

CFL 2020 Cancelled Events

So far, there have been a number of scheduled event cancellations related to the Canadian Football League. The earliest of these cancellations came back in late March when the CFL decided to abort plans for regional combines in Montreal and Edmonton as well as the CFL combine in Toronto.

At the time, plans were being put in place to ensure athletes would be fairly assessed before the global draft on April 16 and the national draft on April 30. Unfortunately, the global draft was postponed to coincide with the opening of the 2020 training camps. The national CFL draft still took place on April 30 as planned.

The final (for now) and most recent postponement has been to the opening of the training camps, which will also affect the global draft mentioned above. Rookie arrivals were due on May 11 with their camps beginning on the 13th. Full camps had been due to commence on May 17.

Unfortunately, all of these events have now been postponed. No further information has currently been released but the board assures fans they will be updated as soon as possible. Due to safety concerns and priorities, future CFL events can only go ahead based on the advice of public health officials and the government. While it is frustrating for football fans, the main concern has to be to control the spread of COVID-19 first and foremost.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
