Football Players of the Week: Deschamps, Wade, Kolodzinski

Β

EDMONTON – After another big weekend that saw three very close Canada West football games, Brandon Deschamps (UBC), Brett Wade (Calgary) and Denton Kolodzinski (Saskatchewan) have been named conference Players of the Week.

Β

OFFENCE: #33 Brandon Deschamps, RB (UBC)

Brandon Deschamps helped orchestrate one of the greatest comebacks in UBC Football history, as the Thunderbirds overcame a 27-point deficit to defeat the University of Alberta 39-36 in overtime.

A third year running back from Prince George, BC, Deschamps rushed for 212 yards on 28 carries and scored two touchdowns on a 38 yard run and a five-yard run. He also added another 14 yards receiving.

Deschamps, who led the Canada West in rushing in 2012, once again stands atop the conference in rushing through two weeks of the season. He has 387 yards through two games, averaging 7.7 yards per carry. UBC as a whole averages a Canada West best 305 yards rushing per game.

Next week Deschamps and the Thunderbirds will square off against the number two leading rusher in the conference, Anthony Coombs and the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday afternoon in Vancouver.

DEFENCE: #52 Brett Wade, DL (Calgary)

Playing in his hometown and returning to his old stomping grounds at Mosaic Stadium, Brett Wade was a force on the defensive line for the No. 5 University of Calgary Dinos Friday night.

Wade picked up three tackles, 2.5 of which were sacks, as the Dinos knocked off the Regina Rams 34-27. Two of the sacks he was part of came in the fourth quarter of what turned out to be a tight game, including a key one on the final drive that helped slow the Rams’ momentum and kept them out of the end zone for the game-tying touchdown.

Wade sits second in the conference with his 2.5 sacks through two weeks of the season.

The Dinos (2-0) face their toughest test of the young season Saturday night when they face the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) at McMahon Stadium.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #32 Denton Kolodzinski, P/K (Saskatchewan)

Fourth-year University of Saskatchewan kicker Denton Kolodzinski was perfect on five field goal attempts, including the 40 yard game winner, in a 36-34 Saskatchewan win over the Manitoba Bisons.

Kolodzinski’s 40-yard kick sealed the victory for the NCIS #8 Huskies. Kolodzinski also hit from 32, 44, 37 and 37 to finish the day 5-for-5.

The five made field goals on Saturday tied Kolodzinski for third in the Saskatchewan record books for field goals made in a game.

Saskatchewan (2-0) visits the Calgary Dinos (2-0) this Saturday in a battle for first place.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
