CWUAA Players of the Week: Shutter, Stefanovic step up for Rams; Henry shows speed for Alberta

EDMONTON – University of Regina Rams quarterback Cayman Shutter had an outstanding performance at Alberta, with responsibility for six touchdowns, while teammate Michael Stefanovic had 10 tackles, including three sacks. Alberta’s Tylor Henry returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown.

OFFENCE:

Cayman Shutter, QB (Regina)

Fourth-year quarterback Cayman Shutter was brilliant in the University of Regina’s 55-35 road victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night in Edmonton.

Shutter completed 37 of his 54 pass attempts for 484 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Besides his four touchdown passes, he also collected a pair of rushing touchdowns on two one-yard plunges.

Shutter’s 37 completions and 484 passing yards both rank second in the school’s single-game record book. Through three games, the Master of Arts student is Canada West’s leader with 1207 passing yards and is on pace to threaten the conference’s single-season record of 2823 yards set by Calgary’s Greg Vavra in 1983.

DEFENCE:

Michael Stefanovic, LB (Regina)

Michael Stefanovic was all over the field in the University of Regina’s 55-35 win over Alberta on Saturday, as the first-year linebacker led all players with 10 tackles and got through for three sacks in the victory.

Two of Stefanovic’s sacks led to Alberta turnovers with the Rams leading by just six in the fourth quarter. His sack on 1st-and-10 five minutes into the final period was followed by a Ryan Filyk interception on second down, and he also got to Alberta quarterback Ryan Schwartz on first down inside two minutes remaining which eventually led to the Golden Bears giving the ball back after a failed third-down gamble.

Stefanovic, a psychology major, joins Stan Van Sichem as the only University of Regina players to collect at least three sacks in a game.  Through three weeks of the season, Stefanovic is tied for the conference lead in sacks and is Canada West’s outright leader with six tackles for loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Tylor Henry, PR (Alberta)

First-year Alberta Golden Bears receiver Tylor Henry, among the leaders in receiving yards in his rookie season, made his mark during Alberta’s loss to Regina with 225 all-purpose yards, including a 97-yard punt return touchdown.

Late in the second quarter, with Alberta trailing, Henry caught a six yard TD pass, and then after Alberta forced Regina to punt, Henry finished the quarter in the end zone after receiving the punt and sprinting 97-yards for his first career CIS punt return touchdown.

He would finish with 101 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown, and 225 all-purpose yards. He leads Canada West in receiving yards and is second in all-purpose yards.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
