Danny Maciocia completes his coaching staff with addition of Addona & Edmunds

The Head coach of the University of Montreal Carabins, Danny Maciocia, announced the appointment of Tony Addona to the position of special teams coordinator and to assistant coach on defense and David Edmunds as an assistant defensive coach.

With these two new additions, Maciocia completes his coaching staff for the 2012 season.

“I am very pleased to have Tony and David,” said the coach of the Carabins. “We have an excellent blend of youth and experience among our group of coaches and players will all be taught by people of high quality. We continue preparing with great enthusiasm. ”

Addona joins the Carabins after ten years as Director of Athletics at Bishop’s University, a period when he held several positions within the coaching staff of the football team, including that of interim head coach in 2011 and 2004. He had previously been successful in 17 seasons at the head coach of Champlain College Cougars, Lennoxville, accumulating an overall record of 125 wins, 47 defeats and a tie in addition to get hold of the Bol d’Or eight times . He also served as athletic director of the college from 1987 to 2001.

Having signed his papers to retire as manager a few weeks ago, Addona, who has 57 years in a few weeks, will finish his term at Bishop’s January 31 and then head to Montreal, his hometown. Surprisingly, he becomes a football coach full time for the first time in his career.

“It was one of my priorities”, admits Addona, “the other being to move back to Montreal where my wife and I have lots of family, including our son. I will now devote all my energies to coach youth football players, both on the field, at school or in other aspects..”

Maciocia and Addona first crossed paths in 1995 during the conquest of the national title (Football Canada Cup) U19 Team Quebec where 19 years Maciocia was offensive coordinator. They again coached together, this time in the roles reversed, with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 2005 and 2006.

“Tony is an experienced coach, an excellent educator who knows what it takes to win and a respected man in the world of football”, said Maciocia. “His advice will be invaluable to our players. ”

Edmunds David joins the Blues after leading the DBs at Vanier College Cheetahs last year. He has served on various teams since 1999. In particular, he was part of the coaching staff of the Sphinx Jacques Rousseau High School from 2008 to 2010 and was the Cougars defensive coordinator in 2007. A native of Ville Saint-Laurent, Edmunds, 29, was also part of the coaching staff of Cactus College Notre Dame from 1999 to 2004, with whom he won two Bol d’ors.

“The main reason that prompted me to join the Carabins is the opportunity to work with Danny Maciocia and Noel Thorpe. I wish to gain experience to go to another level, “said Edmunds.

“Despite his young age, David has a wealth of diverse experience and it certainly has a bright future,” said Maciocia.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
