ATH Joseph a student of the game

Katley Joseph didn’t know anything about football growing up. It wasn’t until he turned 11, when his brother signed him up to play football with the Orleans Bengals. As he learned more about the sport and his understanding of the game grew, he quickly fell in love with the game. Now playing in multiple positions as a defensive back, receiver, and tight end, it has became a passion. When he wasn’t playing football he would spend hours on the computer watching documentaries, games, and ESPN’s First Take. He was constantly studying the game.

Katley pays tribute to great coaching and his hard work for the accolades he has received over the years. He has been presented with several MVP awards. An All-Star selection, and has also been chosen to be Team Captain. This has all added to the importance the game of football plays in his life.

“Football means everything to me. At this point football will always be part of my life. Football has taught me important life skills, helped me gain life experiences and great moments. Football fuels me to always work to improve my skills, train to get bigger, faster and stronger. It also allows me to be an excellent team leader, be very coachable, strive to be the hardest working player and be the hardest working recruit you’ll find.”

Katley Joseph transferred to St. Matthew High School in September of 2016. “I’m the Team Captain & starting Safety for the St. Matthew Tigers. Our current season is going very well. The Tigers are going into the playoffs this week. The team hit one speed bump this season which caused our one and only loss. Which in our eyes was not a loss but a lesson. Since we’ve learned that, something constructive comes from every defeat.” In fact, this Saturday Katley’s high school football team, the Tigers, will be playing in the NCSSAA AAA Championship Final against St-Peters with a potential winning getting them to the OFSAA Bowl series.

The reason Katley transferred schools was motivated by his drive to better his skills as a football player.

“Intent on sharpening my skills, I transferred to St. Matthew High School in September 2016, since my previous school did not have a football program. The Tigers had just acquired Coach Jean Guillaume, who immediately turned their program around and lead the Tigers to their first winning season in years.”

Joseph’s three older brothers are the most influential people he has in his life. “They are my support system and best friends.” Coach Guillaume would also become a very influential person in Katley’s life.

“Little did Coach Jean know, he would become a very influential person for me. In life and in football that season. Coach plays a big part in the development as a player and person. He became a big brother, teacher and role model to us all at St. Matt’s. Coach Jean makes himself available to us, whether it’s before classes or after classes to train, tutor or coach.  He is someone I trust and I can turn to for advice.”

It is this type of guidance that has helped Joseph navigate through the recruiting process and be able to adjust to the next level. He joined the Gridiron Academy, a travel/training team, in November 2015 in order to do this.

“This program kick started my recruitment process. The program allowed me to start getting noticed by several NCAA football programs, visit several universities, showcase my talents all across America and understand the process to make it to the next level. I travelled across the US to participate in several 7vs7 tournaments, showcases and camps. At this point there was no looking back. December 2015 was the beginning of what I like to call ”The Grind”. I started training 5-7 times per week, with several ”Two-A-Days” which were not uncommon in the off season.”

With a strong dedication, commitment, and work ethic at such a young age, Katley has learned a great deal from the game of football. He goes on to say, “ Playing football, I’ve learned very quickly that the difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination. In other words, whatever you truly believe in, your mind can achieve. These lessons are applied in my everyday life and allow me to achieve my goals everyday at school, home and my everyday life.”

When asked about his future education Katley states, “I am currently uncommitted. I am interested in studying Communications or Social Sciences. Playing in University is a once in a lifetime opportunity that could change my life. I would like to attend a college where I can push myself in the classroom and on the football field. I am open to all options and would like to ultimately find the right school match. At the highest level of competition possible.”

While football remains to be his first love, we asked him where he thought he would be today if he wasn’t introduced to the sport so many years ago. He replied that he would probably be playing another sport, but he truly thinks that it is football that led to the numerous opportunities that he has experienced thus far.

On gameday though, Joseph will be getting his fill of traditional Haitian rice and beans with chicken before he hits the field.
