DE Donnelly leading the pack

donnellyMillwoods Grizzlies captain and defensive end Kaden Donnelly is a natural leader on the field and ready to get to the next level.

Donnelly is currently in his 8th year of football, first playing for the Millwoods Grizzlies from atom through peewee and now plays for his high school Austin O’Brien. During grade 10, his first year of playing football at AOB, Donnelly played both quarterback and defensive end. For his grade 11 season, and now in his grade 12 season, he has transitioned to play on both the offensive and defensive line.

During his time in minor football Donnelly wasΒ awarded multiple personal and team honours.Β β€œI’ve won a few awards,” he said when asked. β€œMost valuable player, most valuable offensive player, and two most sportsmanlike.”

At 6’3, 225 lbs, Donnelly can be an intimidating presence on the field that is hard not to notice. Preparing to graduate in 2017, the next step is soon approaching for Donnelly.

β€œThis is the first true recruiting opportunity I’ve had,” Donnelly said of the experience. β€œMy coach has been telling me that some CIS teams have had their eye on me.”

While he has earned a number of personal awards, when asked about the highlight of his season, it was a title his teammates bestowed upon him that he takes the most pride in. While some may consider the title to be a burden, Donnelly finds comfort in being named a captain by his teammates.

β€œThe highlight of last season was being named captain for my senior year. It meant a lot and I was comfortable with it because I have been captain of many of the teams I have played on.”

Donnelly credits the hard work and leadership that drive him to his father, whom also grew up playing football at a high level though his high school years. As someone who grew up appreciating hard work, Kaden names Michael Oher of the NFL as someone he looks up to.

β€œThe way he grew up and became the amazing athlete he is today is unbelievable and truly inspiring,” he explained.

The defensive standout maintains a training schedule of 3-5 sessions per week when not at school or working and as a lineman wants to work on his footwork, as he knows how important it is and is looking at hiring a personal trainer.

Donnelly is not just focused on what he wants on the field, but also has plans off the gridiron as well with a strong interest in automotives.
