Defence leads Okanagan Sun to lopsided win

The streak is alive and well.

The Okanagan Sun found the end zone on their first two offensive possessions in a
relatively easy 50-0 shellacking of the winless Chilliwack Huskers.

The win was the 20th straight for the Sun over the Huskers dating back to Chilliwack’s
entry into the league in 1999.

While the Sun put up a season high 50 points and amassed 341 yards in total offence, it
was the defence who provided the offence with great field position all night long.
The Sun recovered a fumble on the Huskers 11 on the first offensive play of the game and
one play later, Tore Tarcon rambled 11 yards to put the Sun ahead 7-0.

Daylon Pommier snuffed out the next Huskers drive with an interception deep in
Chilliwack territory.
Bobby Davis took advantage, hitting Matt Scheurwater from 21 yards out to put the Sun
ahead 14-0 early in the opening quarter.

After Steven Shott hit a career high 51 yard field goal on the next possession, Tyler
Robson picked off Huskers starter Cory Prince and returned it 30 yards for the third
major of the quarter for a 24-0 lead.

Shott provided the lone point of the second quarter, a single on a wide 15 yard field goal.
Back-up quarterback Taylor Potkins took over from Davis late in the first half and led the
Sun on a pair of touchdown drives in the second half.

Potkins hit Ben White for a 27 yard strike in the third then ran in himself from 10 yards
out.
Tyler Plock scored the other Sun major recovering a loose ball in the end zone after a
blocked punt.

Despite the lopsided score, the Sun were unable to march the ball down the field on a
consistent basis against a porous Huskers defence, taking advantage instead of a short
field courtesy of the Sun defence.

The Sun amassed 233 yards on the ground and only 118 through the air while holding the
Huskers to a measly four first downs and 118 yards of total offence.
The Huskers also turned the ball over seven times including four interceptions.
Sun defensive back Jesse Warawa had one of those picks, his league leading fifth of the
season.

The Sun remain atop the BCFC standings with their 4-1 record.

They return home for a pair of games next Saturday against the 2-3 Kamloops Broncos
then three weeks later on September 12 when they entertain the same Huskers.

Saturday’s win was the third straight shutout victory over the Huskers. In fact, Chilliwack
has yet to score a point against the Sun since Pete McCall took over as head coach at the
beginning of the 2009 season.
