Defence leads Sun to 2nd straight win

The Okanagan Sun defence made a statement Saturday night.

Not in our house.

For the second straight game, the defence kept the opposition out of the end zone in a 30-3 pasting of the visiting Big Kahuna Rams at the the Apple Bowl.

The Sun held the visiting Rams to 290 yards, including a paltry 51 yards on the ground.

Cornerback Jesse Warawa put an end, and an exclamation point on the game almost before it started.

Warawa jumped on out route on the first play of the game, fought to get a handle on the ball, and eventually sprinted 30 yards the other way to put the Sun ahead 7-0 before many in attendance had gotten comfortable in their seats.

Warawa would intercept another pass from starter Marcus Fischer before he was mercilessly pulled from the game before the first half ended.

The fifth year defensive back says the defence takes pride in what it has been able to accomplish thus far this season.

“It feels really good,” says Warawa.

“We’re a bend don’t break defence and that’s what we’re trying to do. It’s working so far so we’re just going to do the same thing and make our coach proud.”

While the defence dominated the offence again was plagued with inconsistency.

Quarterback Bobby Davis managed to complete just 12 of 25 passes for 129 yards. He was also sacked three times.

Davis was able to lead the Sun to a pair of first half touchdowns. Tore Tarcon capped off a drive with a two yard touchdown run late in the opening quarter to put the Sun up 14-0.

Tarcon then established a Sun record and tied a BCFC and CJFL record by scampering 109 yards on a quick hitter up the middle.

He quickly burst through a stacked front seven and outran the Rams secondary.

The 109 yard run came the first play after Warawa’s second interception of the game.

The Sun were held without a point in the second half until back-up Taylor Potkins engineered a scoring drive late in the fourth quarter, completing three passes to Matt Scheurwater, including a perfectly thrown 53 yard scoring bomb.

Potkins was 3-3 for 69 yards and the touchdown in limited duty.

Steven Shott converted all four touchdowns while the Rams conceded a two point safety midway through the second quarter.

All three Rams points came off the boot of Nick Boyd who drilled a 33 yard field goal midway through the third quarter.

Sun head coach Pete McCall was understandably pleased with effort, especially on the heels of last Saturday’s sloppy 24-10 win in Kamloops.

“All facets looked a lot smoother,” says McCall.

“The defence again was stellar and the offence sputtered at times with some dropped balls and missed throws but overall we were happy with the performance.”

McCall says he had hoped to get Potkins into the game long before he came onto the field with five minutes left.

Despite the fact Potkins marched the team down the field in his only real turn with the offence, McCall says, for the time being there is no quarterback controversy.

He says this is Bobby’s team.

“Taylor did a great job in relief and threw the ball very well and I know he is chomping at the bit but it is going to take another week of practice to see how things go but I think the ball is still in Bobby’s hands.”

The Sun, now 2-0 on the season, get a week of practice before hitting their toughest stretch of the season.

They will host the defending champion Vancouver Island Raiders Saturday night at the Apple Bowl in the first half of a home and home series between the BCFC rivals.
