Defences dominant in CJFL Action (video)

The Windsor AKO Fratmen took an early 9-0 lead over the visiting St Leonard Cougars on a Joel Archer Touchdown pass from Christian Hackney (PAT failed) and a Dan Colella FG. But AKO let it slip away, and trailed 10-9 at the half.
In the second half, Beau Lumley exploded for a long TD run, and Collela added the PAT for 16-10 lead. Later in the 3rd quarter, Colella added a 43 yard FG to make it 19-10. On the ensuing kickoff, Colella was able to kick it thru the endzone for a rouge, and a 20-10 lead.
AKO nursed the lead to the final play of the 4th quarter where, St. Leonard scored on a 1-yard QB run. The PAT made it a 20-17 final. AKO held on for an exciting 3 point victory over the previously undefeated Cougars. AKO moves to 2-0 and St. Leonard falls to 2-1.
In other OFC action the Burlington Braves defeated the London Beefeaters 38-2, the Hamilton Hurricanes won 35-12 over the Twin Cities Predators and the Ottawa Sooners shut out the Brampton Bears 26-0.
Following the Labour Day bye, the British Columbia Football Conference resumed action as all three home teams would win and win big over the weekend.
The first place 6-0 Vancouver Island Raiders took down their island rivals, the Westshore (Victoria) Rebels 52-8.
The home side would total an impressive 732 offensive yards on the afternoon.  Quarterback Jordan Yantz would account for 389 yards of it.  He would finish 18 of 27 for 386 yards and threw four more touchdown passes.  He would add three rushing yards.

The reining CJFL Offensive Player of the Year would find nine different receivers.  Andrew Smith had a game high six receptions for 184 yards and had two touchdowns. Dustin Pederson caught five balls for 77 yards, while Michael Schaper and Matt Sawyer would catch the other two Yantz touchdowns.

On the ground, the BCFC rushing leader Jordan Botel would carry 12 times for 136 yards and a score.

The Raider defence would factor in on the victory, not allowing the Rebels to complete a single pass.  Two Rebel quarterbacks would combine for a 0-14 afternoon.  Linebacker Andrew Oake led the “D” with six tackles, a knockdown and would recover a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown.

On the ground the Rebels did find some success as Greg Morris carried 18 times for 205 yards and had the lone major.

The Raiders become the fastest BCFC team to reach 60 wins, doing it in just 66 games.
Also on the weekend the Langley Rams beat the Kamloops Broncos 43-7 and the Okanagan Sun record a 42-7 win over the visiting Chilliwack Huskers.

 

Calgary Colts quarterback Clayton Masikewich had a breakout game as he threw for 375 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Colts ran roughshod over the Huskies at Clarke Park 67-10.
Rookie receivers Rodreke Joseph & Brendon Kearl had big nights; Joseph had 7 catches for 165 yards and a six-pointer, while Kearl reeled in 4 for 130 and found paydirt twice. Tom Shaw & Matt Lamoureux also had major scores. Colts tailback Cuong Thai Lieu ran 13 times for 74 yards, scoring a pair of touchdowns as well. Calgary racked up 606 yards of offense, while the defense led by Alex Saretsky’s pair of picks held the Huskies to 172 yards of offense.
Anthony Barrett notched the lone Edmonton major; a 7-yard reception late in the fourth.
The Saskatoon Hilltops were led by tailback Regan Schuler as he ran for 162 yards on 24 carries and scoring two touchdowns in their 24-10 victory over the Regina Thunder. The Thunder had a brief 7-1 second quarter lead as Wyatt Catley connected with Clay Cooke on a touchdown toss, but a Zack Schmidt field goal, followed by Schuler’s 29-yard touchdown run put Saskatoon in front for good. Regina kicker Ben Koot would make good on a 42-yard field goal to make it a 1-point deficit at halftime.
Two more Schmidt field goals and Schuler’s 2nd touchdown run rounded out the scoring.
Hilltops passer Chase Bradshaw completed 12 of 27 for 137 yards, while Catley went 20 of 37 for 167 yards, with a major and 3 interceptions. Hilltops defensive end Brett Pisio set a new PFC record with 4 pass knockdowns.
