Derbyshire trades a puck for a pigskin

Burke Derbyshire was late to the party, but he did not take long to catch up with everyone else.

The LaSalle Secondary School running back has only played organized football for one year, but has already impressed enough people to make a name for himself.

Derbyshire played AAA level hockey since he was 6 years old, and only recently made the switch in sports. The change has proved to be a fruitful endeavour already.

The 6’2, 195lbs athlete captured the National Capital Bowl this season, and had a stand out performance at the KASSA Finals, ending the game with 149 yards on just 7 carries in a second half, 23 point comeback 30-28 win at Richardson. He also managed to make the Ontario all-star Team East, scoring one touchdown in the Varsity game of this year’s CFC Fox 40 Prospect Challenge in Ottawa.

Playing the highest level of minor hockey, Derbyshire quickly learned a strong work ethic, and along with his athleticism, it transferred over.

“As a ‘new’ football player, I have worked hard to be a student of the game through video, chalk talks and coaching.” Derbyshire said.

He also adds oneĀ thing he has learned to have helps greatly on the field.

“I believe every game my patience and vision have allowed me to be a better decision maker when I get the ball. My speed and strength (also) give me a competitive edge.”

No stranger to studying football, Derbyshire looks at a professional Ā running back for tips and tricks to betterĀ his game.

“I really like and study Ezekiel Elliott off the Dallas Cowboys. I admire the way he runs the ball and how he finds a gaps and explodes through them. He sees the field very well and I really like his style of play.”

However he isn’t planning on cutting his teeth as a professional football player, he has other plans.

“I would like to do my undergraduate in Commerce, and eventually become a lawyer. In football, my dream would be able to get a scholarship and play at that level.”

Derbyshire has had three unofficial visits so far, and has enjoyed the ride.

“The recruitment process has been very exciting. It has definitely intensified with more recruiting (and)coaching discussions and I am excited for future discussions.”

His decision on where to attend school in the fall will be based on both football, and education.

“I am looking for a school with a great reputation and a solid commerce program. Also, a football program that I can both develop as a player and contribute as a player (and) leader both on and off the field.”

Derbyshire has no false illusions on playing football at the university level, but he is ready.

“I think that the transition will be tough, however with hard work, dedication and belief- anything is possible. This offseason my number one focus is on building up my strength. During the season I will make sure that I am well prepared for every game and put forth my best effort in practice and game.”
