Calgary Dinos announce offensive recruits

CALGARY ā€“Ā Ahead of this weekend’s Spring Camp at McMahon Stadium, the Canada West champion University of Calgary Dinos football team is pleased to announce its recruiting class for the 2018 season.

Today, we take a look at the recruits on the offensive side of the football.

Among the biggest recruiting coups of the year in Canada was the commitment of twins Jalen and Tyson Philpot, ranked No. 48 and No. 31, respectively, in Canada Football Chat’s CFC 100 rankings. The Seaquam Secondary products out of Delta, B.C. both represented Canada at the U 18 International Bowl earlier this year in Texas after outstanding senior seasons. Tyson was named the B.C. High School player of the year, with Jalen landing on the provincial all-star team. Both will enter the Dinos’ camp as receivers, and are joined by their high school quarterback, Josh Haydu.

“Both Philpot twins are outstanding football players,” said Head CoachĀ Wayne Harris. “Their dad (Cory) was a great player in the NCAA and the CFL with the B.C. Lions, and they continue the family tradition. Both have proven themselves with Team Canada to be top-notch players, and they were highly recruited. We’re very pleased they decided to choose the University of Calgary.”

Another major addition at receiver will be Brycen Mayoh, the Canadian Junior Football League’s offensive MVP from 2017. The Vancouver Island Raiders product, originally from Tampa Bay, Florida, led the nation with 805 receiving yards last season, hauling in 44 receptions and 12 touchdowns.

“Brycen Mayoh was an outstanding CJFL player,” said Harris. “He has great hands, he’s very fast, and he had a number of TD returns on special teams. He’s elusive and can make pretty much anything happen out there.”

At running back, the Dinos welcome a trio of CFC 100 players in Adre Simmonds from St. Andrew’s College, Tyler Santos from Calgary’s Henry Wise Wood, and local product Tyson Rowe out of St. Francis ā€“ the brother of Dinos linebacker and CFL prospect Boston Rowe. Robert Thirsk grad Zach Newman, nephew of former Dinos great Collin Newman, has also committed at tailback and will represent Calgary high school football at the Montana East-West Shrine Game in Great Falls, Mont. this summer along with offensive line recruit Daniel Stefanyk.

Stefanyk, along with Henry Wise Wood teammate Carter Johnson and St. Francis grads Nick Auvigne amd Cameron Boudewyn, will continue in the long line of outstanding local offensive line talent at the University of Calgary. They’re joined by Carter Comeau out of the Okanagan Sun, along with CFC 100 selection Nolan Cole from Ottawa.

Finally, at quarterback, the Dinos welcome three players in Haydu, Matteo Spoletini, and Matthew Wilson. Wilson is the first-ever Dino to come from Saskatoon’s Holy Cross High School, while Spoletini was the top pivot available in Alberta. A Notre Dame product who also played at Rundle College, Spoletini is son of Dinos great and local legend Tony Spoletini.

In total, 49 players committed to the University of Calgary ahead of the 2018 season. The class includes 13 recruits in the 2018 CFC 100 rankings, along with a pair of Team Canada players. CFC ranks the Dinos’ class No. 1 overall in U SPORTS football.

“We’re very happy with the recruits that we were able to bring in,” said Harris. “Some of the players from Alberta, B.C., and Ontario are among the most outstanding athletes in all of Canada. I think they’ll prove to be a real significant contributing force over their years at the University of Calgary.”

The Dinos take the field for Spring Camp beginning Friday morning. The weekend culminates with Sunday’s scrimmage at 12:30 p.m. at McMahon Stadium.
