Dinos beat up on Bears at KICKOFF (VIDEO)

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos put up 65 points – the fifth-highest total in Canada West since 1995 – in a mauling of the University of Alberta Golden Bears Friday night at McMahon Stadium.BOXSCORE

Running back Steven Lumbala and rookie receiver Brett Blaszko scored two touchdowns apiece as the Dinos won their eighth game in a row over Alberta, jumping out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and adding three more majors before halftime. Calgary kept pouring it on, approaching 650 yards of total offence by the end of the game to send the Bears back north with an 0-2 record.

It was a dominant performance by Calgary from start to finish, but the continuous barrage of orange nylon – 20 infractions for 155 yards in all against the Dinos, 13 of which came in a penalty-filled first half – frustrated Dinos head coach Blake Nill after the game.

“I was embarrassed at our lack of discipline, and I told the kids that at halftime with the number of penalties that were called,” said Nill. “I can’t comment on the penalties, but I thought that overall I just have to fix what I can fix and that’s my guys and were going to have to work hard to make sure something like that doesn’t happen again.

“There is no excuse for the offsides and the procedures, and same with unnecessary roughness, and tonight was easily the most calls I’ve had against a program I’ve coached. It’s too bad to have a crowd and atmosphere like that and to have a flag come down on every third play.”

After a Calgary fumble recovery deep in Alberta territory, Eric Dzwilewski found Blaszko in the end zone for a four-yard score less than four minutes into the contest. Jake Harty added a five-yard touchdown run, diving for the pylon in the corner, and it was 14-0 Calgary after 15 minutes – much to the delight of the 5,307 fans in attendance at KICKOFF, the University of Calgary’s annual homecoming game.

The second quarter saw the Dinos find the end zone three times in less than seven minutes. Blaszko scored his second of the night – and the third of his rookie season – when Dzwilewski tossed a nine-yard bullet right at the goal line. With two defenders draped all over him, the 6-foot-4 Burlington, Ont. native somehow managed to hold on to the ball and break the plane, putting the Dinos up 21-0. Both of Lumbala’s touchdowns – 1- and 6-yard runs – followed before halftime.

Dzwilewski left the game at the half after completing 16 of 22 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns, giving way to backups Andrew Buckley and Jimmy Underdahl in the second half. Blaszko and Lumbala also sat out the second half, Blaszko having caught seven passes for 117 yards while Lumbala scampered for 67 yards on 10 carries.

Chris Dobko caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Buckley early in the third quarter. The first career touchdowns for running backs Denzel Morrison and Mercer Timmis, along with a trio of field goals by Johnny Mark, rounded out the scoring for the Dinos.

Timmis, making his CIS debut in the backfield, ended the night as the Dinos’ leading rusher with five carries for 90 yards and a major, while Buckley and Underdahl both completed every pass they threw: Buckley 6-6 for 93 yards, and Underdahl 2-2 for 11 yards.

Linebackers Mike Edem and Cory Roboch led the Dinos defence with eight and 7.5 tackles, respectively on the night, while Mark boomed four punts for a 47-yard average – including a monster 65-yarder.

Alberta finally broke the goose egg on Stephen Fabian’s 29-yard field goal at 6:48 of the third quarter, ending a scoreless stretch of 96:48 to open the season following their opening-week 32-0 loss at Saskatchewan. Fabian was the busiest Golden Bear on the night, punting 12 times and adding another field goal, this one from 31 yards with time expired at the end of the game.

Bears starter Curtis Dell managed to go just 3-for-10 for 33 yards in the opening half, while Ryan Schwartz fared little better in the second with six completions on 16 attempts for 58 yards. Tailback Tyler Lewis was Alberta’s leading offensive player with 65 rushing yards, while defensively Tyler Greenslade led the way with six tackles.

Calgary (2-0) heads to Winnipeg next week to face the Manitoba Bisons, while Alberta (0-2) returns home to host the Regina Rams in their home opener.
