Dinos squeeze out last minute victory over Bisons (stats)

It was never expected, but the Calgary Dinos managed to sneak their way into victory with a 35:31 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in their Sept. 3 home game. Despite having a number of near victories, thanks partially to QB Khaleal Williams, and even outright slipups on the part of Calgary, the Bisons found themselves in a pickle near third and fourth quarter, with the play positions giving a clear advantage to the Dinos. At this point, it was only inevitable that they would win; they only needed a single touchdown to beat them by one field goal, let alone four.

Despite the victory, it was entirely unexpected; by the end of the second quarter, the Bisons had a 31:17 lead(through an amazing 90 yard touchdown by Khaleal Williams). Most of the track record of Calgary throughout the game suggested otherwise, however; QB Eric Dzwilewski’s tendancy to catch and pass either incompletely or out of bounds might have cost the Dinos near the beginning of the game. Nick Boyd’s 36 yard field goal helped push the game in favour of the Bisons a little, pushing them to 16:17(M/C).

The Bisons’ OL Tyler Fabbri and HB Grayson Wells were injured, so that may have come into play near the end. Furthermore, Lumbala scoring a 13 yard touchdown for the Dinos put them in a position where only one more was needed–which, as it so happened, was the result near the end of the game with Williams making a fumble and Calgary scoring a seven yard touchdown. This alone pushed them into victory with only two minutes on the clock.

In the end, there was some very clear potential for the Bisons in this game–constant stepping out of bounds by Dzwilewski, the penalty flag to Calgary for illegal procedure near the third quarter–however, in the end Dzwilewski was able to step up his game long enough to push the game in favour of the Dinos. The Bisons will have be more careful to savour their opponents’ losses, and exploit their own victories, if they want to avoid this again.
