CALGARY (CIS) β The University of Calgary Dinos booked their second straight ticket to the Desjardins Vanier Cup with a convincing 35-8 victory over the Saint Maryβs Huskies Saturday afternoon in the national semi-final Mitchell Bowl at a chilly McMahon Stadium.
The Canada West champion Dinos (9-2) will face the No. 1-ranked, 12-0 UniversitΓ© Laval Rouge et Or in the national championship game next Saturday, Nov. 27 at 11:45 a.m. ET (9:45 a.m. MT) at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City, live on TSN and Radio-Canada.
It was the second straight semi-final win for the Dinos over the Huskies after a 38-14 win in the 2009 Uteck Bowl. The Dinos will be looking for redemption in the Vanier Cup after giving up an 18-point halftime lead to the Queenβs Gaels last year, falling 33-31.
βWeβve been a pretty consistent team over the past couple of years,β said Calgary head coach Blake Nill after qualifying for the sixth Vanier Cup of his career. βWeβve been beating the teams weβre supposed to and weβve been competitive with the teams weβre supposed to be competitive with. Now, we have to face the number one team in the country. Weβre really looking forward to going back.β
Laval defeated Western 13-11 in a tightly-played Uteck Bowl earlier Saturday in Quebec City.
It marks the first time in school history that the Dinos will attend back-to-back Vanier Cups, and they got there again on the strength of a solid defensive effort as the vaunted Calgary offence took its time to warm up as the mercury continued to plummet. Kickoff temperature was a chilly -16 C.
The frigid conditions placed a premium on field position. The Dinos spent the first quarter slowly pushing the Huskies back in their own territory, and were rewarded with 1:55 remaining when Nathan Coehoorn collected a 23-yard toss from Erik Glavic to get the Dinos out to a 7-0 lead.
Saint Maryβs struggled to generate offence against the Dinos all day. The second quarter was most indicative of this, where they turned the ball over five times. Swedish import defensive back Doctor Cassama forced two fumbles and defensive back Michael Lau reeled in a pair of interceptions, including one in the end zone to snuff out a promising Huskies drive.
The Dinos, however, were unable to capitalize on the turnovers. The Saint Maryβs defence kept Calgary out of the red zone and kicker Aaron Ifield, the all-time CIS field goal leader, went 0-2 through the first 30 minutes. The Dinos headed to the locker room at halftime with an 8-0 lead and several more points left on the field.
Calgary opened the second half with a seven-play, 74-yard drive capped off by Steven Lumbalaβs 33-yard touchdown run on a third-and-two gamble β and the Dinos offence went to work. Glavic connected with Coehoorn again for a 78-yard major late in the third quarter to give the home side a 22-1 lead heading into the fourth.
Ifield hit a pair of field goals from 20 and 29 yards in the fourth quarter, while Glavic found Anthony Parker on a 31-yard TD strike with just five minutes to play.
With ten minutes left in the game, Saint Maryβs finally found the end zone. Quarterback Micah Brown fired a short pass to running back Craig Leger, who scrambled in for a 38-yard touchdown.
Lumbala was named the BlackBerry Player of the Game after rushing for 127 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown on the afternoon.
βThe offensive line made the holes that we needed, and I was able to pick up some yards,β said the second-year Calgary native. βWe have one more, and thatβs the most important game. Weβll soak it in tonight, but tomorrow is a new day and we have to get ready.β
Glavic completed 16 of 25 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns on the day while Brown struggled with the cold for the Huskies, completing just 10 of 25 passes for 135 yards and the lone major. He was replaced for the majority of the second quarter by Mack Blewett, who completed five of 10 pass attempts for 60 yards β but he also tossed up three interceptions to the Calgary secondary.
The Huskies managed a total of 100 yards along the ground, led by Blewettβs 36 and 32 from Atlantic conference MVP Jahmeek Taylor. Kevin Walsh was the leading Saint Maryβs receiver on the day, hauling in five passes for 44 yards, followed closely by Taylorβs four catches for 42.
The one-two punch of receivers Parker and Coehoorn was again in force for the Dinos Saturday. Coehoorn racked up 127 yards and two TDs on just five catches, while Parker had seven catches for 119 yards.
NOTES: It was the 13th consecutive victory for Canada West schools in home Bowl games β¦ Calgary is now 4-1 against Saint Maryβs all-time β¦ the Dinos head to the eighth Vanier Cup in school history and are four-time national champions (1983, 1985, 1993, 1995) β¦
