Dual shutouts

MFL: Β Wanderers, Shockers, post shutouts in Week 5

Week 5 of the Maritime Football League saw the Halifax Shockers and Saint John Wanderers posted shutouts in their respective victories.

The Shockers defeated the Privateers 23-0 in PEI. Both teams were coming off close victories the previous week. Β In this game, the Privateers dug a hole early and could not come back.

Quarterback Chris Mutch took responsibility for the loss on his own shoulders.

β€œI threw three interceptions early and it was hard to come back from that,” said Chris. β€œThe defense played well, as an offense we just didn’t help them.”

β€œThey out executed us and we didn’t come out ready to play. Β It was just one of those days where we weren’t able to perform offensively.”

The Shockers touchdowns came courtesy of Mitch Kays who had three interceptions on the day and returned an interception for a touchdown for the second time this season. Matt Shannon and Greg Pelley each rushed for scores.

β€œThe interception return by Kays really set the tone for us early,” said Head Coach Dan Campbell. β€œDefensively we played well; Andrew Oak had a great game getting after the quarterback.”

β€œWe went up early and felt in control. Β It gave us an opportunity to play some other guys.”

The Shockers are on a bye this week and will be missing quite a few players heading into their game against the Capital City Gladiators in two weeks time.

The Privateers will use their bye week as an opportunity to get healthy.

β€œThe next two weeks we want to focus on getting guys healthy and make sure everyone is on the same page,” said Mutch. β€œWe need to get the intensity up at kick off.”

β€œWe want to keep things simple and continue to build as we get deeper into the season.”

In the second game, the Saint John Wanderers hosted the Capital Area Gladiators.

The Gladiators only dressed 17 players and suffered a few injuries to put them down to 15 players by halftime. The Gladiators were forced to forfeit the rest of the game.

The final score was 42-0 for the Wanderers.

The Gladiators have a bye this week, which the players will rest to heal their injuries. Β Meanwhile, the Wanderers will head to Moncton this upcoming weekend the play the Mustangs.

Kick off is set for 8:00 pm at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
