Durham (LOSSA): Monarchs escape upset, earn berth in OFSAA Bowl Series

Take your two fingers and put a pencil in between them, that and a two point conversion was all that separated the Titans from sending an undefeated Monarchs team to overtime for the LOSSA Championship.

Like the last matchup between these two great teams, the 28-20 score could not even be able to give a glimpse into a game that was filled with drama, defense, and electrifying plays. Both teams battled back in forth in a highly contested championship that could only be categorized under the word “epic”.

The scoring would open up in the first quarter with a rouge scored by St. Mary’s Tyler Decarious with 9:05 left. About five minutes later Holy Trinity would respond with a Dan Lay field goal to make the game 3-1, more resembling a hockey score than a football game. With the rain pouring in buckets, the Titans had survived the first quarter something they failed to do in the last meeting with the Monarchs.

Early in the second  quarter, Holy Trinity’s Chris Waldinsperger would find Derek Cyr in the endzone for a touchdown to put the Titans up 10-1. On the ensuing kickoff, Dan Lay would show off his leg strength as he scored a rouge on a free kick. With 5:44 left in the half, the Monarchs would find life with a Davian Reid-Lynch touchdown to cut the Titan lead to 11-8.

The Monarchs had found the gas pedal and weren’t letting up soon. A Provo pass to Justice Johnson would again land the Monarchs in the endzone to regain the the lead 15-11. Again the Monarchs found themselves in the endzone, this time Alonzo Addae would get credit. The Titans would go into halftime scratching their heads at how an 11 point lead could reverse itself in the span of just over five and a half  minutes.

The third quarter opened in a good way for the Titans scoring a Giovanni Akeson safety two minutes in. After that, both teams stuggles mightily to move the ball and the third quarter became one of field position. The game would go into the final quarter of the LOSSA season still very much up for grabs.

The fourth quarter would open nicely for St. Marys with Raishaun Provo scoring a touchdown with his feet with 8:47 left in the game. The Titans would respond right away when Derek Cyr ripped off an electrifying kick return touchdown that would land the Titans down by 8 with 8:32 left. The Monarchs would respond with a long time consuming drive.

After the Titans defense had given up a lot of yards, they decided they had had enough and sent the Monarchs backwards. On third and incredibly long, the Monarchs would attempt a fake field goal that would come up inches short. The Titans had 107 yards to go and 1:55 to work with. The Titans once again showed their never die attitude and drove 106 yards in a minute and 20 seconds led by grade 12 signal caller Chris Waldinsperger the Titans willed their way to a first and goal from the one yard line.. Two quarterback sneaks later the Titans would be half a yard away.

On the third, they would be about a pencils width short, ending their LOSSA hopes. The Titans despite their loss showed just how much heart can do to a game, the Monarchs on paper would blow Holy Trinity out of the water. Due to the heart displayed by a gritty Titans team proved that St. Mary’s is very beatable and turned the game into one for the ages, as they say “an instant classic”

Both teams played an incredible game with an incredible atmosphere and crowd. One cannot effectively put into words what this game felt like for the players on both sides. Both teams played incredibly hard with a tonne of heart, it became one of those games where you wish both teams could win .Good luck to the St. Marys Monarchs as they represent LOSSA in OFSAA Bowl Series

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
