Durham (LOSSA) Preview: Archrivals Titans, Gators battle against common cause

For the third time in as many years arch-rivals Donald A Wilson and Holy Trinity will unite at the Oshawa Civic and battle for a common cause. Probably the only thing these two schools can agree on is that cancer affects us all, and anything people can do to stop it should be done.

The game under the lights has been named “Football for the Cure” with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. The game itself however will be filled with all the emotion and hatred one would expect out of a marquee rivalry. This game  has a tonne of implications given that Holy Trinity lost its game against Pickering; it has become a must win for a Titans team looking to lock up second place and gain the all important bye week. For Wilson winning this game would give them a much favourable road to the LOSSA finals. So make no mistake the teams may stand together for cancer before the game but once the game begins, so does the hatred.

The Titan offence has been pitiful the past two weeks, with neither pass or run working effectively. Even attempts at a no huddle offence have failed to create a rhythm for a once third ranked offence. Their final and most important chance at redeeming themselves comes against an always stubborn Gator defence that averages only 17 points against a game. As for the Titan offence, they’ve been held out of the end zone for two weeks so something must change if they want to walk away victorious Friday night.

On the other side of the ball the Titans are in a very good place only averaging  11 points a game against. They’ll face a different test this week as they play their first real power football team. The previous match ups had been against pass happy offences. For the Titan defence to maintain their low scoring average their linebacking core must play at  a very high level to stuff the run of a powerful gator offence. The defensive backs also face a different type of test this week because when the Gators throw, they go deep.

This is one of those games that only guarantee entertainment, as the games have always been close. The teams are almost completely equal on paper, with Wilson lagging  just a little bit behind the Titans statistically;  but like the Pickering game, stats are irrelevant at kickoff. With the implications involved in this game one is sure to fully experience everything that is a high school football rivalry; a type of rivalry that cannot be paralleled at any other level of the game.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
